Al Saralis
Summer Breeze- 21st Century Contemporary Figure Painting

2023

About the Item

Al Saralis 'Summer Breeze' 110 x 80 cm oil on canvas Artist Al Saralis lives and works in Hampshire (United Kingdom) and, as he says, does not paint reality, but what he perceives and wants to pass on. His subject is always created in collaboration with the models he works with. The models are known to him and know what he wants to show with his paintings. In his colorful portraits and figure paintings, the models 'like' to look at him. The viewer makes contact with the models and thus also with the artist. After all, the models look at the artist while posing. During the summer exhibition 'Summer Breeze' we show a series of paintings that the artist has made for the exhibition over the past six months. The artist himself about his work: ‘I have always been interested in the classical beauty of Renaissance painting, and this alongside my fascination with the human form has led my work to develop to where it is now. For this ‘ Summer Breeze ‘ show I chose to explore more fully the visual aspects of sun and shade which is a strong element of my imagery, compositionally. Strong light and dark pools of shadows. Nature and its changes are a consideration in my work. We all are aware of climate change and it's threat. This is an underlying element within my paintings. Much of the work has elements of changes in nature. The 'breeze' is a metaphor for the changes that we are experiencing in our climate. I use photographs as a source but am not interested in photographic realism . I love the 'frozen' moment of a photo and I try to elongate that moment. I like the contradiction of this. I often use the color of rust within the work . Rust color relates to time passing . I regard myself as a figurative artist but not a painter of realism as such. The type of realism I try to achieve is of an expressive and emotive realism. The figures within the paintings have an introspection which is also something I like to explore . I like my work to be regarded as a mixture of contemporary and classical. The work of Al Saralis can be found in collections in UK, various other European countries, USA, etc. We ship our paintings worldwide for free in a custom made wooden crate. American Progress
By Tracy Stuckey
Located in Bozeman, MT
Tracy Stuckey received his BFA in painting from Florida State University and his MFA from the University of New Mexico. He has exhibited his work extensively throughout the United States, with numerous solo and group exhibitions, including shows curated by gallery owner Linda Durham and artist Joel Peter Witkin. He has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards, most recently the Professional Development Grant from the West Virginia Division of Culture and History. In 2009 he was an artist-in-residence at the Center for Land Use Interpretation in Wendover, Utah. Also a professor, Stuckey has taught at West Virginia University, and most recently, Colorado State University. Tracy and his wife, artist Erika Osborne, live in Fort Collins, Colorado. ARTIST STATEMENT My paintings operate in a fictitious world that utilizes the mythologies and realities of the modern American West. Because of its unique history, the Western United States is more than just a location; it is a label, a persona and most importantly a cultural identity. The word "Western" is a category; it is used to describe films, literature, music, art, and fashion. In my work I use the cowboy and cowgirl and other stereotypical Western themes coupled with pop cultural depictions of the region to reflect my own interpretations of the contemporary West. I am interested in historian Michael Johnson...

Dreaming Away - Highly Textured Dream-like Painting with Surreal Nautical Theme
By Victor Wang
Located in Chicago, IL
Victor Wang's subject is a female seemingly caught in a contemplative moment yet a war rages behind her. She dons a hat shaped as a boat and carries and oar as if to "Dream Away" these other thoughts. Wang uses a blend of luminous colors and buttery textures to evoke these enigmatic moments of meditation. Influence by the Renaissance Masters Titian and Rembrandt for their glazing and layering techniques respectively, the artist builds the surface using heavy paint, swirling and mixing the color on the canvas. The end result is a poetic and emotionally powerful representation of the human form. Victor Wang Dreaming Away, 2017 oil on canvas 42h x 56w in 106.68h x 142.24w cm VWG009 My path through life has been adventurous, exciting, and dream-like. My experience of settling into America in search of better opportunities has been both challenging and inspiring. I use the human face as a vehicle to paint human experiences - worry and wonder, sadness and pleasure - which reflect the emotional stage directly tied to my immigration experiences. I grew up amongst the sunflower fields in northern China. In my childhood years, I played under the bright, yellow sunflowers with my brothers everyday. China’s Cultural Revolution played an important part in my life. During that time, sunflowers were used as political allegories to depict how citizens of China should follow Mao who represented the sun, since sunflowers follow the sun’s movements. People eventually inferred the deception that this symbol masked. After graduating from high school, I was sent to a labor camp in the country for ‘reeducation’ during China’s Cultural Revolution. There, I was subject to grueling farm work. Often, I worked in corn and sunflower fields from sunrise to sunset. Thus, for me, sunflowers evoke both personal joy and sadness. Therefore, to deliver my complex feelings, I use sunflowers as a metaphor to connote my background and emotional stage. My incorporation of collages of figures from China’s Tang Dynasty represents my Chinese heritage and is a constant reminder of where I came from. The texture and earthiness on the canvas’s surface are inspired by the texture of the soil on the farm where I worked in China. Although I often gain great pleasure from the process of painting, it is most important to unfold expressively those feelings within myself. Wang belongs to a generation of immigrant painters from China, whose artistic background was defined by socialist realism but took advantage of their skills and broke away from that tradition to create new subjects in the U.S. “When I was a student during Cultural Revolution, Soviet realism art was among the dominant source of influence and it grabbed us like lightening rod...
