About the Item

Dutch late 17th century old master Portrait of a gentleman, with a lace collar This captivating portrait depicts a gentleman with piercing blue eyes and chestnut brown hair, he's wearing a very refined a shimmering silk jacket with silver highlights and an elegant white lace collar with a tassel. Adriaen van der Werff (1659-1722) was a prominent Dutch painter renowned for his meticulous and polished style, which earned him significant acclaim in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Born in Kralingen near Rotterdam, he studied under Eglon van der Neer and quickly distinguished himself with his highly refined technique. Although van der Werff excelled in historical, biblical, and mythological themes, his portraits were particularly celebrated for their elegance and precision. Van der Werff's portraits are notable for their smooth, enamel-like finish and extraordinary attention to detail, which set him apart from his contemporaries. His ability to capture the likeness and personality of his subjects with such finesse made his portraits highly sought after. His sitters often appeared with a serene and dignified demeanor, rendered with graceful figures and delicately painted drapery. This careful attention to the subtleties of fabric and form contributed to the lifelike quality of his work. One of his most significant patrons was the Elector Palatine Johann Wilhelm, who appointed van der Werff as court painter in Düsseldorf. Despite his success and the high demand for his work, van der Werff remained dedicated to perfecting his craft.
