About the Item
A Summer’s Day by William Miller Frazer (1864-1961) depicts a tranquil countryside scene of sheep grazing and resting. Frazer’s sheep find numerous ways to enjoy the pleasantries of a prospering field. Several luscious, green trees occupy the painting’s middle ground. Behind the trees’ feathering limbs, viewers find an expansive blue sky that seems to lead to an endless horizon. The painting, an oil on canvas measuring 15.25 x 19.25 inches unframed (21.5 x 25.25 inches framed), offers a lovely presentation of Frazer’s impressionist style and his fascination with landscapes. Though Frazer’s landscapes mostly depict scenes from the Northern British Isles, each work reflects his desire to capture the scene’s surrounding nature, time of day, atmospheric effects, and season. This painting is situated within its original, gold gilt frame, and is signed in the lower left corner.
Frazer was born at Scone, Perthshire and studied at Perth Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy Schools. Within his lifetime, Frazer achieved notoriety and was one of the best-loved and respected artists. In 1908 Frazer was elected President of the Society of Scottish Artists, and later served as Treasurer for the Royal Scottish Academy from 1932-1937. His works have been featured throughout Scotland in various galleries and museums, including the Fine Art Society in Edinburgh, The Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, and the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour.

Late 19th/early 20th century oil on canvas painting in the manner of Abraham Hulk the Younger (1851-1922), this painting was acquired by Saltire Gallerie with a larger painting signed by Hulk the Younger, (just SOLD). Presented in a period decorative gilt frame, the painting is of a cottage in a woodland with cattle by a pond, a little black dog and man and a woman standing by. In the distance is a glimpse of a river and grasses, framed by trees and an overcast sky.
Hulk is renowned for his treatment of the changing season from summer to autumn, and the golden leaves and fading greens in this painting suggest this changing time of year.

Biography
John William Hilton (1904 - 1983)
Born in Carrington, North Dakota, John Hilton is known for desert landscape painting as well as scenes with cowboys, horses, and cattle. He was also a poet, musician, geologist, miner, and entertainer.
His father was a baker, and the family lived in a shack on a farm. When he was four, he went to China with his mother and father, who became a missionary. There he met Chinese bandits, philosophers, and walked along the Great Wall by the time he was age 10. The family was separated during the Sun Yat Sen revolution, and thinking the father was dead, the mother returned to North Dakota where the father eventually found them.
John moved to Los Angeles in 1918 and worked for a gem company, but it folded during the Depression. Then he designed jewelry for Hollywood film stars and sold stones world wide.
In the 1930s, financially broke, he moved to the desert determined to become a painter and supporting himself as a singer and guitar player. He also operated a curio shop near Indio, California, and from that time lived either in the desert or at Twenty-Nine Palms.
