About the Item
County Mayo Ireland is a very special place. My dear old friend Grace ended up settling here with her husband. Hers is a story of romance, love, illness, hope and dreams that resonated deeply with me. She sent me pictures of her new homeland that were no less than magical. Grace has a heart of gold. I felt gifted to be in touch with her again and to try to imagine the journey that took her to a most unusual place. Home to some of the most gorgeous views of mountains and ocean, this image of County Mayo Sunset, sparked my earliest memory - that of my mother approaching me from a distance. I remember thinking – “that beautiful woman is my mother and I love her and why can’t I get to her?" I marveled at her dark thick hair, her slender figure and a face that Da Vinci would have painted. Seeing her, filled my heart with warmth. She had put me in a room with a French door that was locked. As she came closer, I could see her pull the skeleton key from her apron to open the door to take me to dinner.
Recently I asked my mother about this memory. She confirmed I was 2 years old and all the details i have given are correct.
County Mayo Sunset triggered one of the most important memories of my life. If I could paint what I felt at that moment, it would be colors that embodied a deep warmth within my pure infant heart – it would be this County Mayo Sunset. Rare pigments in this work include lead-tin orange, lead-tin yellow and lapis lazuli blue.

Some might call it alchemy, that finds its way in my paintings as a strong unavoidable vibration from my own hand and the materials I use. Tom Irizarry is a man who does not compromise in any avenue of life and especially in making paintings. My work, like myself, stands firm on it's own ground. If you can see a fraction of what goes through my imagination as I am painting, well then my job is complete.
