Susan Hope Fogel
Jersey Shore (Whimsical Panoramic Watercolor of Figures at the Beach), Framed

2021

About the Item

"Jersey Shore", 2021 by Susan Hope Fogel Abstract Deconstructionist watercolor painting of a summer beach scene 7 x 24 inches, archival watercolor and gouache on 300 lb. Arches paper with deckled edge 11 x 28 inches in a custom silver frame Signed by the artist Excellent condition, ready to hang as is Susan Hope Fogel describes her paintings in watercolor as “an alternating dance of construction and deconstruction until the form is there, yet not defined in the traditional sense.” Scenes are pieced together, as if from a memory; convening outdoors for a summer evening concert; people-watching in Central Park; long, summer afternoons on the beach. Her work with its many layers of paint, drips, and splatters, achieves a mood that is activated by how she paints the light. Figures are prevalent in Fogel’s landscapes and urban scenes. She enriches these silhouettes with personality and character simply by capturing their posture, pose, shape and size. This charming contemporary panoramic view of figures at the beach was created by Hudson Valley artist, Susan Hope Fogel, in 2021. This expressionist inspired abstraction is composed of fragmented brushstrokes in a cool blue and grey palette that are softly blended together to create a misty or shadowy bleeding effect. Figures lounge in beach chairs, nestled beneath sun umbrellas looking out toward the water. In some areas, wet paint is left to drip down the paper. The archival watercolor and gouache drawing is on sturdy 300 lb. Arches paper with deckled edges and is framed with a silver frame. About the artist: After spending many years painting in the style of traditional realism , Susan had the opportunity to work with Paul Ching-Bor to explore a new form of expression in Deconstructionist Watercolor. Working in New York City with a group of large scale watercolorists, Susan soon found herself fascinated by the experimental quality of this new media. A great departure from the world of realism this media allowed for great freedom of expression creating from an intuitive place, deep within, instead of inspiration from the outside world. The focus of her work has now shifted to large scale watercolor painting with an emphasis on abstraction of landscape and cityscape. Susan has studied in art schools in New York City including: classical drawing at The New York Academy of Art, figure and portrait painting at The Art Students League and The National Academy of Design. She credits John Philip Osborne for developing her painter’s eyes at The Ridgewood Art Institute.

By Carlyle Wolfe Lee
Located in Atlanta, GA
"Spring Beauties" is an abstract landscape featuring hues of green, purple and blue. This work is framed in a simple white frame behind Museum Glass measuring 28 by 36 inches. Carlyle is inspired by the works of Claude Monet, Edouard Vuillard, Henri Matisse, Walter Inglis Anderson, Charles Burchfield, Ellsworth Kelly, Alexander Calder and Mary Delany. This piece is part of a collaborative series by Carlyle and her husband Thad Lee. This body of work was made in tandem, through painting and photography, that explores their mutual delight in the natural world and within their own marriage. Carlyle Wolfe’s paintings & works on paper are about an awareness of the natural world—becoming progressively, cyclically more present to its rhythms, gaining deeper understanding of its design, & acquiring direct experiential knowledge of its mysterious beauty. For the last 15 years, Wolfe has been making contour line drawings of plants form observation. From her drawings, she isolates silhouettes into paper stencils which she uses to create oil paintings & works on paper – or cut out of metal to make sculptures. Her work is cumulative in nature – gradually marking time & seasonal change, unity & variety, individual & collective beauty. Wolfe grew up in Canton, Mississippi, & earned a BFA in painting from the University of Mississippi & an MFA in painting & drawing from Louisiana State University. She has also studied in Cortona, Italy, & at the University of Georgia. Wolfe has exhibited work throughout the South, including Spalding...
