This is a unique modern expressionistic depiction of the sun through storm clouds in acrylic on silk satin painting by British contemporary artist Rose Fulbright.
The artwork is signed, sold framed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
As the work's title suggests, here the focus is on imagining not rays of light, but rays of energy radiating from the sun, which fights to be seen through dense storm clouds. Rose is interested in the spiritual connections humanity has had with the sun and sky over history, and the power that it holds over our survival and imaginations.
This piece is from the Light & Water Collection, which was showcased in a solo show in Surrey, United Kingdom, in July 2024.
Light & Water is a series of paintings and painted furniture that was inspired by a family trip to Scandinavia in 2023. In this body of work, Rose explores her experiences of awe in nature, working with the most unifying element of human experience, the sky above.
The fairly restricted colour palette still manages to capture the many hues of the sky, with deep purples, greys and blues lightening to a true sky blue to the top of the painting. An abundance of light and breathing space are introduced by the white areas, and a flowing consistency of the lines of energy allow the eye to roam around the work.
This painting has been made with multiple applications of handmade acrylic wash on specially treated couture silk, which enables the artist to build up scenes in the manner of a watercolorist.
The resulting works have a beguiling depth, the silk background showing an appealing luminescence through the shifting layers of paint.

Raised in a particularly artistic Welsh family, Rose grew up surrounded by the ceramics industry of the Potteries (her grandmother was Susan Williams-Ellis, founder of Portmeirion Pottery) and has a deep connection with form, colour and pattern. After earning a First Class Honours Bachelor's degree from the University of the Arts London, her artistic career includes two years working as a painter full time showing in solo and group exhibitions, as well as over ten years as designer, creative and art director of her eponymous luxury loungewear brand Rose Fulbright. Rose lived and worked in Beijing for four years, followed by Brussels for five years before settling in London with her family where she is now studying for a Masters in Fine Art at City & Guilds School of Art. A tactile and practically proficient person, Rose works with silk, canvas, paper and wood, in a range of paint mediums from fluid watercolours to house paints and acrylics, which she mixes from raw pigment powders. Rose’s work explores humanity and the natural world through the lens of a colourist, celebrating moments of joy and playfulness juxtaposed with concepts of the mysterious, Sublime power of nature. Her belief, deeply rooted in her upbringing, that art and beauty should be applied to everything that surrounds us, means that her work often spills over onto antique furniture pieces, wall murals and fabric designs, making her painting collections into 360 degree experiences.
