Philippe Tanneur

About the Item

Philippe Tanneur (Marseille, 1795 - 1878) Marina in storm Oil on canvas, 54 x 68 cm Framed, 63 x 77 cm Signed lower right and dated 1866 The son of an artilleryman, Philippe Tanneur was born in Marseille in 1795. His life was absolutely adventurous: in his youth he was a cabin boy and roamed the seas on the dreaded privateers' boats. Following a major injury, however, he decided to radically change his lifestyle, opening a small painting studio at the port area of Marseille. Although self-taught, the artist quickly made a name for himself and participated in some of France's most celebrated national exhibitions beginning in the mid-1920s: Tanneur exhibited his works at the Paris Salon of 1827 and later at the Salon of 1829, achieving great public and critical acclaim. It was on the latter occasion that Tanneur's pictorial output catalyzed the attention and interest of King Charles X, who sent the artist along with crown troops to Algiers so that he could paint the landing and highlights of the battles between the French army and Algerian soldiers. His great talent earned him the protection of other prominent figures on the political scene of the time, those of Louis Philippe or Tsar Nicholas I, but his very difficult character caused him to lose one after another. During a voyage to America with his family, his ship, the steamer Humbolt, sankDecember 18, 1855 near the resort of Halifax; the passengers were almost all saved, and the artist painted a canvas depicting this tragic event. From then on, the theme of shipwreck or the stormy navy enters powerfully into his visual imagery, as also appears evidenced by this beautiful painting, within which tragic personal experiences meet with the Romantic ideal of depicting a splendid but fatal nature for man.

Pair of landscapes Painted by Antonio Francesco Peruzzini
Located in Milan, IT
Antonio Francesco Peruzzini (Ancona, 1643/1646 - Milan, 1724) Rural landscape with river and village center Rural landscape with river and tower (2) Oil on canvas, cm 108 x 62 Expert opinion Prof. Emilio Negro Recognizable in the present pair of paintings is the hand of what Mina Gregori called "the most original and path-breaking landscape painter to emerge in the late seventeenth century," namely Antonio Francesco Peruzzini. Finally identified by Arslan in 1959 as such a "Perugino," author of a St. Sebastian in a private Milanese collection, Peruzzini has in recent times been reevaluated from his former qualification as a mere subordinate of Lissandrino (Alessandro Magnasco), in comparison with whom he turns out to be an excellent coadjutor and original landscape painter. A distant mountainous horizon, of frozen vigor, is proposed in both canvases interspersed with a spindly tree in the background that screws swirlingly to the sky. The anti-academicism and nonconformism that characterized Peruzzini's entire career appear evident here and justify in retrospect his choice of such figurative collaborators as Magnasco and Sebastiano Ricci...
