About the Item

Canadian artist Peter Hoffer (1965) is best known for his landscape paintings. His style has also been compared to the idealistic landscapes of the 19th-century landscape painter John Constable. After a trip to Paris, Hoffer began to experiment with surface textures in the landscape. Thus, he began to sand and grind the layers of the painted surface. Subtly applied drops of paint seem to pay homage to the 20th century art movement abstract expressionism. Intrigued by the early 18th century French Salon, where artists re-embellished their unsold works, Hoffer completes his paintings by applying a coat of Dammar varnish and a coat of epoxy to create a reflective dome surface. This gives depth to his landscapes. Luminous skies set by the outline of trees, the drama of light and shadow. The viewer has to get closer, change their perspective and look longer to overcome reflections so that they can see the details glitter beneath the surface. "I wanted to do the landscape in a manner in which it is personified. Where the tree becomes the individual, even playing on some clichés." While admiring the beauty of the work, we are aware that a modern artist asks the viewer to consider the process and act of creation itself. Intriguing is an image that is both classic and modern. Peter Hoffer's work is widely praised and collected. Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec and the German consulate in Toronto are in possession of his work. The famous Hôtel Le Reine Elizabeth in Montreal also has a work by Hoffer hanging in one of the public spaces. Hoffer studied painting and sculpture at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto and the University of Guelph, where he obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1993. After a stay in New York City, he studied sculpture at Concordia University in Montreal, graduating in 1996 with a master’s in fine art.

''Bouquet of Roses'', Contemporary Still Life with Roses in a Orange Vase
By Sasja Wagenaar
Located in Utrecht, NL
When you look at this painting ''Bouquet of Roses'' by Dutch artist Sasja Wagenaar (1959) from a distance you see a perfectly painted image, but up close a generous paint streak is visible. She has a unique way of applying shadow and light effects in her paintings. Sasja Wagenaar is inspired by our classic masters from the seventeenth century, a flourishing period in Dutch painting. The century in which new continents, markets and arts were discovered. At that time in the Netherlands it was a real fad to collect chinoiserie. Originally porcelain, but also Dutch pottery, also known as Delft blue, inspired by Chinese and especially by Japanese bowls and vases. To quote Sasja Wagenaar: ‘Every platter, every bowl is already so much in itself. They were made with great care through hundreds of hands before they ended up here. Their character must be respected in composing the story that forms a still life. They are as alive as the blossom branches and I try to let them speak together. Slowly the image is created’. Although rooted in the 17th century Dutch tradition, her work shows her very own signature and is contemporary. As a true Modern Dutch Master...

Bourgogne - contemporary, landscape, tree, acrylic and resin on panel
By Peter Hoffer
Located in Bloomfield, ON
This contemporary landscape painting of a tree was created by Peter Hoffer, respected in the international art world as a fine contemporary artist for his ethereal, atmospheric landscapes. Reminiscent of the great romanticists of the 19th century, Peter Hoffer’s landscapes are a blend of realism and impressionism. His series of tree ‘portraits’ imbues each tree with a distinct ‘personality’ accentuated by his process. Hoffer uses scratches, markings, paint drippings, and thick coats of resin to add character to each mixed media piece. The result is thoroughly modern. This horizontal landscape offers a commanding view of the surrounding countryside-verdant green fields and a turquoise blue sky. The viewer’s eye is drawn to the lone tree in the middle of the canvas captured at the height of the season in bright pinks. “A landscape is continually evolving. Its topography consists of repetitive gestures of surfacing, resurfacing, and erosion. Exposed to the elements, scarred by the wind and shifting soils, the landscape reveals its own narrative.” Peter Hoffer They are profound works from an artist with a clear vision.” Peter Simpson...
