Moonlight Over Water by Wilhelmina (Mina) Carlson-Bredberg (1857–1943) Signed with monogram and dated 1925 Oil on panel 54 x 41 cm This evocative painting by Swedish female artist Mina Carlson-Bredberg captures a nocturnal landscape bathed in moonlight, where the interplay of light and color creates a dreamlike and mystic atmosphere. The composition, with its dissolution of contours and luminous tones, reflects Carlson-Bredberg’s mature style, which evolved into an expressive and almost visionary use of color in her later years. The artwork bears compositional similarities to two of August Strindberg’s early 20th-century paintings, Inferno and The Yellow Autumn Painting (both from 1901). Mina Carlson-Bredberg – A Modernist Ahead of Her Time Wilhelmina (Mina) Carlson-Bredberg was a pioneering modernist artist, both within Swedish and international contexts, long before modernism’s official breakthrough. Her work Sunrise in Södertälje (1892, Nationalmuseum, NM7081) is often considered remarkably ahead of its time, prefiguring Swedish art of the 1920s and 1930s with its bold approach to light and color. Her reputation grew when she exhibited her painting "At the Piano" in the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris, a work noted for its distinctive use of color and soft, diffused lines, an artistic manner she continued to refine throughout her career. Critics frequently compared her work to that of Pierre-Auguste Renoir, though her atmospheric and almost ethereal technique also reveals strong influences from British art, particularly James McNeill Whistler. After leaving Paris in 1890, she spent time in England, where she became acquainted with the renowned art connoisseur Lewis F. Day, who introduced her to British Impressionism and its evolution. This period had a lasting impact on her style, shaping her signature approach to light and form. Following her marriage to Chancellor G. Carlson in 1895, her artistic output slowed, as she focused on domestic life. However, after her husband’s passing in 1920, Carlson-Bredberg returned to painting with renewed intensity. From this period onward, her technique became increasingly expressive, with contours dissolving further and her colors often reaching a nearly flaming, visionary brilliance. Throughout her career, she exhibited widely, including major shows at Liljevalchs (1917), Björck’s Art Gallery (1920, 1921), Galerie Moderne (1931), and a posthumous retrospective at Stockholm City Museum in 1971. Critics consistently praised her work for its painterly sensitivity and atmospheric depth, confirming her place as an important yet often overlooked figure in Swedish art history. Mina Carlson-Bredberg’s legacy continues to be reassessed, and her contributions as a female modernist pioneer are increasingly recognized today.
