I have spent my entire life in the West, but it wasn’t until I started my environmental studies program in college that I really started to more consciously pay attention to the landscapes and cultures around me and how they are interconnected. The West is now a cornerstone to my identity. My paintings are the primary way in which I try to understand the complexities of the region where I live. Most of my work is built on themes of human perception, the boundaries and possibilities of our senses, and the importance of individual and collective memory in shaping cultural imagery and aesthetics of place. I like to use common Western imagery and symbolism to create conceptual works that are Western in aesthetic but employ themes that are widely applicable to the American experience. I feel compelled as an artist to express how this absolutely one-of-a-kind place has the ability to profoundly impact all those who exist within it, whether we are aware of it or not.

For the last 10 years Travis Walker has made landscape paintings about Jackson Hole, a place that never ceases to inspire him to pick up his brushes. He works on location, capturing the essence of the seemingly mundane scenes around town: an old salon, a decaying house with a fence made of skis, a vintage trailer park. His work is influenced by the work of American regionalists Edward Hopper and Grant Wood, Japanese printmaking, and German Expressionism.
Travis Walker is the founder and director of Teton Artlab, a nonprofit arts organization that provides studio space for artists. He was born in 1976 in Tokyo, Japan, and earned his BFA in Painting and Printmaking in 2000 from Virginia Commonwealth University. Through a combination of on-site field studies and larger studio pieces I make bodies of work that reflect the individual characteristics of a specific place while retaining a critical awareness of the landscape genre. This practice, while fully absorbed into the cliché of modern landscape painting, is not innocuous. It is rooted in a history of globalism and environmental dominance. Through my work I explore this spatial language at times allowing individual works to teeter into abstraction.
