Louis Pastour
French Post Impressionist Oil on Panel, View of Vieux Cannes, South of France

1916

About the Item

French Post Impressionist, early 20th century, oil on panel view of a street scene by noted artist Louis Pastour. The painting is signed and dated bottom right. The panel is painted recto verso, the view to the back is a bouquet of Zinnias or anemones similar to the painting by Pastour held in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Provenance: Private French collection, South of France A charming view of a typical French street view, probably Pastour's native Vieux Cannes. The artist has captured a serene rural lane bordered by textured stone walls under a vibrant, sunlit sky. The artist employs thick, dynamic brushstrokes that convey movement and depth, creating a tactile impression of the scene. Bright, impressionistic use of colour highlights the lush greenery and sun-dappled foliage, suggesting a warm, inviting atmosphere. The distant building partially obscured by trees adds an intriguing focal point, suggesting a hidden bastide or farmhouse. The perspective draws the viewer into the painting, creating a sense of journey and exploration. This piece is a masterful blend of realism and impressionism, where every stroke seems deliberate, yet spontaneous, emphasizing the beauty and tranquility of rural landscapes. The composition’s harmonious interplay of light and shadow underscores the artist's technical proficiency and emotional connection to the scene, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in its peaceful ambiance. The subject of the other side of the panel is a group of flowers. This painting boldly showcases a richly textured floral composition, executed with a masterful application of impasto techniques. The piece features a bouquet of flowers in muted tones of cream, pink, and violet, skillfully layered against a dark, textured background. The thick, dynamic brushstrokes create a sense of depth and movement, giving the flowers a three-dimensional appearance. Each petal is uniquely defined, capturing the play of light and shadow, while the surrounding foliage adds an earthy contrast. This painting's unique charm lies in its tactile quality, inviting viewers to experience the interplay of colours and textures. The juxtaposition of the vibrant blooms against the somber background highlights the artist’s ability to convey emotion through materiality. Its dramatic and expressive style makes it a captivating focal point in any collection. If Louis Pastour is nicknamed the "painter of the sun" it is not for nothing. Indeed, the painter, who was born and died in Cannes (June 26, 1876 – December 6, 1948), did not hesitate to represent his native city from every angle. Through numerous paintings, he sublimates the sun, the sea and the warmth of the beautiful landscapes of the Côte d'Azur. At the age of 18, he left for Paris where he took drawing classes at the École des Arts Décoratifs. After graduating, he returned to the region to create the Association des Beaux-Arts de Cannes in 1902. It was at this time that his career began and he was noticed, he organized the very first annual exhibition of local painters. Even though he travelled extensively he always returned to his native Cannes for inspiration. It was also one of the main cities where he exhibited his works during his lifetime. Today, most of his paintings are held and exhibited at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nice.
