Katherine Fraser
"As Far as the Mind Can See" Hyper-realistic oil painting

2016

About the Item

"As Far as the Mind Can See" is a 62in x 82in original oil painting by Katherine Fraser in a handmade wood frame. Artist Statement // Life often strikes me as a string of moments, like a series of film stills, in which we observe ourselves. I paint people experiencing these moments of profound self-awareness and growth; when the rest of the world drops away and we are left bare. My paintings have the visceral quality of memories or dreams, when the image is reduced to the essential, and the mood is what draws your focus, not the specific details. My subject matter comes from my own memories and experiences that feel in some way universal. I have found that certain kinds of settings tend to lead people inward, and to me the rural landscape is a nursery for the soul. My memories of growing up in Maine are a great source of inspiration. Though my subjects usually stand alone, I am less interested in loneliness than in the way being alone makes us feel most alive and connected to our true nature. New York Apartments - Landscape
Located in Soquel, CA
Dramatic skyline by unknown artist Cole (20th Century). A series of apartment buildings are rendered in short, colorful brushstrokes, almost in a pointillist style. Next to the buildings, and American flag hangs from a flagpole, contrasting against a hazy blue and white background of buildings in the distance. At the bottom of the composition, a lone woman hangs laundry to dry on the roof of the apartment, adding a sense of scale to the piece. Signed in the lower right corner ("COLE") Presented in an ornate gilded frame...

Wellington, Washington Avalanche of March 1, 1910 - Original Oil Painting
By Eric Edward Esper
Located in Chicago, IL
Also known as the Great Northern Railway disaster and Americas deadliest avalanche. After days of traveling west and passing through the 2.6 mile Cascade Tunnel, the GNR passenger train was trapped by snow at the tiny town of Wellington Washington in the Cascade Mountains. For 6 days the passengers survived on the train while railmen worked dauntlessly through continuous avalanches to clear the tracks ahead towards the next town. Fearful of the snow looming over them on the mountain above, the passengers were assured that they were safest where they were. The weather was severe and eventually an avalanche swept the GNR passenger train and a mail train off the tracks towards the river below, resulting in 96 deaths and 23 surviving injured.
