circa 1900

About the Item

"Femmes nue allongee" oil/panel 12.5 x 17.75, is an oil painting on panel by Jules Pages. The painting is in good condition but could benefit from some conservation cleaning, etc and a new appropriate frame. Born in San Francisco, California on May 16, 1867, to parents with French ancestry. He was raised in an artistic environment. His father, Jules Françios Pages (1843-1910) ran a local engraving business, and his son worked there as an apprentice. In 1888, he moved to Paris, France in order to study at the Académie Julian under Jules Joseph Lefebvre, Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant and Tony Robert-Fleury. After returning to San Francisco, he worked as an illustrator for The San Francisco Examiner, and other newspapers. He returned to Paris, in 1902 and began teaching night classes at the Académie Julian. Pages spent forty years in France, returning frequently to San Francisco to paint and exhibit his work. He exhibited his work in 1915 at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. source: wikipedia Following the outbreak of World War II, Pages returned to the United States and died in San Francisco on May 22, 1946.[5] ARTIST'S STATEMENT I have been in the art business as an artist and dealer since the early 80's. Almost 40 years now. I primarily concentrate on my own art. My art is derived in a variety of ways. I'm a responder. I respond to light, color, design, etc and I love painting both outdoors on location and in the studio under a controlled environment. I try to convey an idea, mood or just simply a beautiful setting. I'm inspired by a wide variety of subject matter and styles of painting and do not adhere to just one way. My paintings have won numerous awards over the years and have been collected both nationally and internationally. They can be found in three museum collections, the White House Collection and many private collections.
