Description of the Artwork Alineació, París is an evocative depiction of a deserted Parisian terrace, with rows of tables and chairs aligned in an almost infinite perspective. Created in the 1990s, this work reflects the artist's fascination with urban scenes characterized by order and geometric harmony. The use of cool tones and soft morning light conveys a sense of serenity and stillness, as if the day is just beginning. The loose yet detailed brushstrokes suggest the texture of the chairs and the pavement, while the blurred background adds depth and an ethereal atmosphere. This painting is a fine example of contemporary Neo-Impressionism, where realism blends with a subjective artistic interpretation of light and space. Biography of the Artist Josep Maria Vayreda Canadell (Olot, 1932 – Girona, 2001) was a prominent Spanish painter, celebrated for his focus on urban landscapes, seascapes, and scenes of everyday life. Coming from a family with a strong artistic tradition, he was the grandson of Marian Vayreda Vila and a relative of Joaquim Vayreda, founder of the Olot School of Landscape Painting. Vayreda Canadell began his artistic training at the Olot School of Fine Arts. Although he initially pursued a law degree at the University of Barcelona, he abandoned it to fully dedicate himself to painting. In 1958, he held his first exhibition at the Sala Jardín in Barcelona, marking the beginning of his artistic career. Between 1960 and 1966, he lived in Paris, where he attended the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. He participated in numerous group exhibitions during his time in Paris, which had a profound influence on his style, adding an international dimension to his work. Later, he traveled to the United States, exhibiting in cities such as New York and Philadelphia, further establishing himself as a renowned artist. Although closely linked to the Olot School tradition, Vayreda Canadell developed a unique style characterized by a free interpretation of landscapes and a focus on geometric forms, light, and atmosphere. His urban and seascape paintings, particularly those of Cadaqués and Paris, are especially recognized for their balance between detail and an ethereal ambiance. He passed away in Girona in 2001, leaving behind a rich artistic legacy that reflects his poetic vision of landscapes and everyday scenes. Nineteenth Century Winter Landscape in Pennsylvania by Thomas Birch
By Thomas Birch
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Thomas Birch (American, born England, 1779-1851) Winter Landscape, Pennsylvania Oil on canvas, 18 x 24 inches FRAMED: 27 x 33 inches (approx.) Thomas Birch was born in Warwickshire, England, son of the enamel and miniature painter William Russell Birch (1755-1834). He and his father settled in Philadelphia in 1794 and produced popular sets of engravings that documented the city's growth such as The City of Philadelphia (1800) and Country Seats (1808). Thomas Birch began to paint portraits around 1806, and soon gravitated to the subjects that made him famous, landscapes, winter scenes, and marine scenes. Birch also painted numerous winter scenes throughout his career, perhaps influenced by the popularity of sleighing and skating in Philadelphia. His landscapes represented the more rustic tradition of English painting and although the subject matter was either the Pennsylvania of New Jersey countryside, Birch’s imagination was oriented toward seventeenth century Dutch painting as he was influenced by artists Jan van Goyen and Salomon van Ruysdael. Birch frequently exhibited his work at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Artists’ Fund Society, formed in 1835. His art was influential in the later development of the Hudson River School of painting and the style of romantic realism...
