The Carlson family immigrated to the United States in 1884, making their home in Buffalo, New York. Carlson attended evening art classes at the Art Students League of Buffalo, New York. There Carlson received instruction from Lucius Wolcott Hitchcock, a former pupil at the Académie Colarossi in Paris and the Art Students League of New York. Carlson won a scholarship in 1903 or 1904 to study with Lovell Birge Harrison at the Byrdcliffe Colony in Woodstock, New York. Carlson began exhibiting work in such national shows as the annual of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1905. From this period on, he maintained an active exhibition schedule and submitted works in a variety of media, though with particular success in watercolor and oil. In 1906, the Art Students League Summer School awarded Carlson his third scholarship to study Landscape painting. Carlson became a specialist in winter scenes and received an appointment as assistant director of Woodstock in 1908.[1] Career In 1911, he won his first important award at the Swedish-American Exhibition in Chicago and when he was elected to Associate membership of the National Academy of Design. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed by the Art Students League to the directorship of the Woodstock School of Landscape Painting. In 1912, the Salmagundi Club presented him with the Vezin Prize for watercolors, as well as the first Isidor Prize. In the following year, Carlson won a silver medal from the Washington Society of Artists.[2] Carlson won a silver medal at the Panama–Pacific International Exposition of 1915. He was presented with the Carnegie Prize and the Altman First Prize by the National Academy of Design in 1918, and, in the following year, he resigned his position as director of Woodstock School of Landscape Painting. In 1920, Carlson began teaching during the summer months at the Broadmoor Art Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Carlson founded the John F. Carlson School of Landscape Painting at Woodstock in 1922. Three years later, the artist was elected a full member of the National Academy of Design.[3] In 1928, Carlson published an instructional book entitled Elementary Principles of Landscape Paintings. The book was reprinted in 1953, 1958, 1970 and 1973. More recent editions have been titled Carlson's Guide to Landscape Painting.[4] Source: from Wikipedia SELLERS STATEMENT I have been in the art business as an artist and collector since the early 80's. I'm currently offering select paintings from my collection like this one. In order to collect new paintings, I must sell off some of my current collection. For art that I have painted, it is derived in a variety of ways. I'm a responder. I respond to light, color, design, etc. and I love painting both outdoors on location and in the studio under a controlled environment. I try to convey an idea, mood or just simply a beautiful setting. I'm inspired by a wide variety of subject matter and styles of painting and do not adhere to just one way. My paintings have won numerous awards over the years and have been collected both nationally and internationally. They can be found in three museum collections, the White House Collection and many private collections.

The Afternoon Milking, original 20x32 impressionist farm landscape
Located in Spring Lake, NJ
Heading due west from NYC to escape the hustle and bustle of city living and arrive in time for the afternoon milking was quite a trek for the American aristocrats who built the estates of the New Jersey Somerset Hills during the Great Depression. Whether arriving by horse and carriage, train or motorcar, the festivities never ceased once there, overlooking the bucolic farms and farmland, resplendent with with some of the most elaborate homes and estates in the country. A popular arrival spot was Bernardsville, with it's horse and carriage manufacturing plant, car repair and train station, still home to a dairy farm just outside of the town center. In the fall 2023 she will teach a workshop at a castle in France, where artists will stay and enjoy the southern French food and scenes. I paint because it’s the best way I know to communicate, study, and observe creative work that’s how Texas painter V…. Vaughan (the first initial stands for Virginia) describes her drive to create fine art. “It’s a calling,” she says of her life’s work, which has taken several twists and turns but has, nevertheless, led her down the path toward fulfillment. A lifelong Texan, Vaughan grew up in the Austin area and today makes her home in Round Rock, a suburb of the capital city. As a child, she exhibited a love of making art and played the role of the creative one among the seven children in her family, eventually working for several of her siblings as a sign painter and designer. Her parents forever encouraged her to appreciate and mine her passion, instilling in her that it was not simply a passing fancy, but an innate gift. “It was always conveyed to me that this was a God-given talent,” she says. Somehow that made me feel like it was something I was supposed to do. It gave me permission to pursue it. Vaughan attended college on an athletic scholarship, though she filled her schedule with art classes and subsequently secured an internship at an advertising agency. That introduction to the corporate world set her off in a new direction—she left school to parlay the summer job into a full-time position. She continued to work as a commercial artist for many years after that, winning several prestigious ADDY Awards and working on high-profile accounts for Samsung, the Lady Bird Johnson...
