John Thompson, a pivotal figure in the development of Colorado’s modern art movement, left an enduring legacy as both an artist and educator. Though not widely known nationally, his deep influence on the regional art scene earned him the title "Dean of Colorado Artists." Over a career spanning more than thirty years, Thompson’s commitment to artistic excellence helped introduce modernism to Colorado, inspiring a new appreciation for diverse forms of expression.
Thompson's formal education began at the Art Students League of Buffalo and continued in New York City, where he studied with prominent artists. His time in Europe was a turning point in his development as he immersed himself in both academic and modernist traditions, particularly influenced by the work of Cézanne. After settling in Colorado in 1914, he quickly made his mark on the local art community, infusing it with the avant-garde principles he had embraced abroad.
His mentorship extended to students of Polish heritage in Buffalo—Józef Bakoś, Alexander Korda, and Walter Mruk—who followed him to Denver after his move in 1917. Bakoś and Mruk would later become founding members of Los Cinco Pintores, Santa Fe's first modernist group. Thompson also played a key role in the Santa Fe Art School, serving on the faculty in the mid-1920s alongside prominent artists like Andrew Dasburg, B.J.O. Nordfeldt, and Walter Ufer.
Thompson’s contributions extended beyond the studio. His work as a muralist, with commissions for banks, private homes, and public buildings, showcased his refined sense of composition and color. His teaching career at the University of Denver, where he emphasized the importance of strong foundations in drawing and composition, further solidified his influence on future generations of artists.
Today, Thompson’s works are held in collections such as the Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art and the Denver Art Museum, a testament to his lasting impact on the artistic legacy of the American West.

John Edward Thompson
John Edward Thompson was one of Colorado's most acclaimed modernist painters. He was born in Buffalo in 1882. He studied at the Art Students League in New York with L.W. Hitchcock and also at the Académie Julian in Paris with J.P. Laurens in 1907. In 1917, Thompson moved to Denver. He organized a Colorado Armory Show in 1918, undaunted by the negative attitude that modern art received in the first half of the 20th century. Thompson began teaching at the Denver Academy of Applied Art and later taught at the University of Denver. While teaching at the University of Denver he helped to found the Chappell House which was later known as the Denver University art department. Through the exposure he gained from his mural work, Thompson quickly made a name for himself among Denver society. In 1928, Thompson became one of the founding members of the Denver Artists Guild. Thompson spent many summers painting and teaching in Santa Fe and made important contributions to that art community as well. For his dedication to art and the community, John Edward Thompson came to be known as the Dean of Colorado Painters. John Edward Thompson died in Colorado in 1945.

Marjorie Bell Chambers (also known as Marjorie Bell) was born in New York in 1923 and became a significant figure in both the arts and social activism. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1943 with a Bachelor of Arts in Art History and Political Science and later earned a Master of Arts from Cornell University in 1948. Chambers moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico in the 1940s, where she raised her family and worked as a substitute teacher while her husband, physicist William H. Chambers, worked at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
In addition to her artistic pursuits, Chambers had a distinguished career in education and women's advocacy. She earned a PhD in History and Political Science from the University of New Mexico in 1974, later serving as a faculty member and dean at various institutions, including the University of Denver’s Colorado Women's College. As a lifelong advocate for women's rights, she was appointed to the National Advisory Council on Women's Educational Programs in 1976 and played an influential role as vice-chair of President Carter...
