French Post Impressionist oil on canvas view of a street scene by Jean Jacques Antoine. The painting is signed and dated bottom left.
A strong and imposing view of a typical French street scene, possibly Paris. Antoine has captured two figures walking down an incline next to the stone garden wall of an impressive mansion just visible through the trees branches. Beyond in the distance the mansard roofs of other buildings further down the hill are visible. The lush dark green of the garden foliage and trees in the right of the painting contrast with the airy brightness of the left portion. An accomplished and charming painting that would enhance any interior or collection.
Maurice de Vlaminck was an influence on many artists of his generation. Impressed by a retrospective exhibition of Paul Cézanne’s paintings in 1907, Vlaminck began to emulate the Post-Impressionist artist’s work. He adopted a more subdued palette after his earlier Fauvist paintings and turned to painting landscapes with solid compositions. After World War I he left Paris and moved to the countryside, where he painted rural scenes in a dramatic yet mannered style.
