James Lahey
Stream Through a Field in Spring - abstract landscape, oil on canvas on panel

2001

About the Item

This abstract oil painting of a landscape is by James Lahey. As a Canadian artist, James Lahey has acquired a reputation for his distinctively beautiful paintings of both landscapes and still life. His artwork has been profoundly influenced by both European masters such as Rembrandt and Caravaggio and the work of his own artist mother. It was his mother who first gave him a paintbox of oils at age 12 and encouraged him to paint plein air. This abstracted landscape features a stream winding through a grassy field, the bright blue, cloud-filled sky in the background. It appears to capture a spring thaw as the stream is white in places. The image is built up with many fine layers—a characteristic of Lahey’s work and finished in a smooth, high, gloss. The palette is predominantly earthy with bright patches of cranberry red, burnt orange, blue, purple, sky blue, and white. “James Lahey must often dream about painting. Whenever I talk with him it’s clear that the subject is never far from his thoughts and the scope and depth of his practice. His considering probing experimentation and polish is evident in everything he does.” Dennis Reid, Chief Curator Research, Art Gallery of Ontario “Lahey’s art is foremost about the craft and the memory of a moment embellished with time and beauty. “Jennifer Kostuik, Art Historian, Owner—Kostuik Gallery Vancouver James Lahey completed his BFA at York University (Toronto) in 1984 with studies in Art and Architecture in Italy through a joint program with York University and Lowell University in Massachusetts. Lahey went on to hold positions at The Art Gallery at Harbourfront, The Power Plant, The Art Gallery of Ontario, and Bruce Mau Design. Since 1998, he has concentrated exclusively on his own art practice. In 2001, Lahey was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy. James Lahey's work can be found in numerous private and public collections in the US and across Canada.
