About the Item
A wonderful view of the heartbreakingly beautiful Fontainebleau/Barbizon region, which was home to some of the greatest painters of the 19th and early 20th Century. The particular spot presented here is the river Loing at Montigny-sur-Loing, where Cezanne and Sisley loved to paint. The village is just a short walk away from Grez-sur-Loing, where John Singer Sargent, Francis Brooks Chadwick, Robert Vonnoh, Edward Simmons and Theodore Robinson worked, among others.
The painting presented here is a work by Impressionist Jacques Van Coppenolle (1878 - 1915) who was born in Montigny, as son of the artist Edouard Van Coppenolle. Jacques hence is depicting a landscape close to his heart. We can feel his affection for it in the rendering of its light and colours with loose brushstrokes.
Jacques exhibited at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Indépendants in Paris from 1904 to 1914, and was appointed a member of the Autumn Salon in 1910.
Highly esteemed, and with a brilliant career ahead of him, Jacques Van Coppenolle tragically lost his life in action during World War I, in 1915. Some of his works are now in the museum of Clamency. Here is a wonderful opportunity to acquire a rare painting by the artist depicting the loveliness of summer in the French countryside.
