NOTES: Painter and teacher, born and lived in London. He studied at Clapham School of Art, 1939; St Martin’s School of Art, 1941; and at Royal College of Art, 1947–50, gaining a first-class pass and the Andrew Lloyd Scholarship for landscape painting, 1950. Was married to the artist Pamela Izzard. Millar was elected to RBA in 1954. He was a visiting lecturer at Royal Academy Schools from 1964–92; was head of fine art at Walthamstow School of Art, 1966–73; then was head of fine art at Kingston Polytechnic, 1973–86. Showed widely in mixed exhibitions, including Leicester and Piccadilly Galleries; RA; Roland, Browse & Delbanco; Odette Gilbert and Fieldborne Galleries; Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts; Whitechapel Art Gallery; and the provinces.
Solo shows included Rumbold Gallery, Linton Court Gallery, Linfield Galleries and Duncan Campbell. Among prizes won were Greater London Council Spirit of London Painting Competition, Rowney Prize, 1979; RBA 1st prize, Daler-Rowney Award, 1986; De Laszlo Medal, 1989; and Winsor & Newton prize winner, 2001, the year Millar was elected NEAC. RA holds his work.
