About the Item
French Mid 20th Century oil on board Fauvist view of a road in a landscape, probably near Nice in the South of France and the surrounding countryside, by Hyppolite Roger. The painting is signed bottom left and has the atelier stamp and various exhibition references to the back of the board.. There is also a retailer stamp for Papeterie Rontani a notable artists supply shop in Nice, South of France.
A wonderful, vibrant and colourful painting of a road leading off into the countryside, probably around Nice on the Côte d’Azur. Roger has used energetic colour and a great sense of perspective so we can imagine travelling on the road on into the surrounding hills.
Fauvism was a style of painting that flourished in France around the turn of the 20th century. Fauve artists used pure, brilliant colour aggressively applied straight from the paint tubes to create a sense of an explosion on the canvas.
The Fauves painted directly from nature, as the Impressionists had before them, but Fauvist works were invested with a strong expressive reaction to the subjects portrayed. First formally exhibited in Paris in 1905, Fauvist paintings shocked visitors to the annual Salon d’Automne; one of these visitors was the critic Louis Vauxcelles, who, because of the violence of their works, dubbed the painters fauves (“wild beasts”).
The leader of the group was Henri Matisse, who had arrived at the Fauve style after experimenting with the various Post-Impressionist approaches of Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, and Georges Seurat. Matisse’s studies led him to reject traditional renderings of three-dimensional space and to seek instead a new picture space defined by movement of colour. He exhibited his famous Woman with the Hat at the 1905 exhibition. In this painting, brisk strokes of colour—blues, greens, and reds—form an energetic, expressive view of the woman. The crude paint application, which left areas of raw canvas exposed, was appalling to viewers at the time.

'Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe', Hommage to Édouard Manet. Oil on Board.
Located in Cotignac, FR
French oil on board painting of a bucolic picnic in the countryside. Presented in period chip carved wood frame.
The artist has been inspired by the painting Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe by Édouard Manet. They have created an intimate scene of four friends sharing a picnic in the countryside. The central character is naked whereas the others are in various stages of undress. The picnic is spread out on a fine white cloth, the wicker picnic basket to one side. A dog looks on from the side-lines hoping for something from the picnic. A very charming and intimate scene colourfully rendered.

Impressions de New York No. 3
Located in Saratoga Springs, NY
David Solot, a dentist and painter, was born in Falciu (Romania) and
settled in Paris in 1928. His art was surrealistic dentally inspired plus
portraits and city landscapes.
****************************
Translated from an article by Luana Hrisanti Rigot:
"In 1956, at the Charlotte Norberg Gallery (Paris), he presented his first personal exhibition, composed of an ensemble of surrealist paintings of professional inspiration (dental elements). Two years later, at Gallery Royale (Rochefort), he exhibits another 50 paintings on the subject. At that time, a decisive event for the painter David Solot was made: a great new-York-born antibiotic producer Lederle Cy learns about his work and contacts him through the US Ambassador to Paris, proposing an advertising contract and buying the reproduction right for 24 of its canvases. A year later, the same company bought the right to print three of its cloths in color. This was the starting point of his international notoriety.
In 1959, the American Dental...
