About the Item
Hiroshi Sato’s "Pass" (2024) is a monumental original oil on canvas that exemplifies his precisionist approach to contemporary figurative painting. Measuring 38 x 90 inches, this panoramic work presents a solitary male figure standing at the threshold of a broad, empty intersection, absorbed in contemplation as vast open land stretches toward the horizon. The cinematic composition evokes feelings of stillness and introspection, while its architectural edges and atmospheric color harmonies reflect Sato’s mastery of form and light.
Rendered with carefully modulated brushwork, "Pass" is a vivid study in geometry and tonal contrast. Cool blue shadows carve out angular shapes across the streetscape, while soft gradients of orange and ochre recede into the background, hinting at the quiet vastness of the American West. Sato uses color blocking and subtle tonal variation to manipulate perspective, guiding the viewer’s gaze through layers of space and time.
Born in Japan and trained in the United States, Sato often blends Eastern minimalism with Western realism, and this piece continues his exploration of stillness within the contemporary landscape. "Pass" is unframed but ready to hang, offering collectors an opportunity to acquire a commanding and contemplative statement work from one of today’s leading figurative painters.

Hiroshi Sato, born in September 1987 in Japan, is a distinguished contemporary artist known for his realist paintings that delve into human consciousness and the interaction between mind and environment. From the age of three to fourteen, Sato spent his childhood in Tanzania, where he developed a keen sense of observation, understanding that he was not a participant in his surroundings but an observer. This perspective, combined with his exposure to diverse cultures, class, wealth, and languages, forms the backdrop of his interest in perception. A finalist for the Rise Art Prize 2018, Sato's work draws comparisons to Cezanne, Hopper, and Vermeer while maintaining a unique personal style. Influenced by Chuck Close, Euan Uglow, Johannes Vermeer, Edward Hopper, and Andrew Wyeth, Sato's paintings are technically excellent and narratively rich, often set in interior environments to create cohesive and compelling scenes. Based in San Francisco's Mission District, Sato continues to captivate audiences with his thoughtful and introspective approach to painting.

Artist Bio & Statement:
Hiroshi Sato was born September 1987 in Japan. From the age of three to fourteen he spent his childhood in Tanzania. While there, he recognized where he lived was not home, and where he called home was some place he hardly ever knew. From a very young age, he understood he was not a participant of his surroundings. Therefore, his role was of an observer. This recognition and his exposure to alternate cultures, class, wealth, language is his backdrop to his interest in perception and how it is explored in the singular image.
He enrolled in the fine-arts program at the Academy of Art University, San Francisco, graduating with a Bachelors and Masters in Fine Art.
Hiroshi Sato is focused on contemporary realist oil painting. He is best known for paintings of figures in an interior environment. He draws influence from past and present artists including Vermeer, Degas, Andrew Wyeth, Euan Uglow, Hopper and Chuck Close. Sato’s work shows his interest in geometric design principles of the old masters and is currently exploring the simultaneous illusion of form and flatness in space. His goal is to portray, and better understand our various states of consciousness within ourselves through the visual medium.

TECHNOLOGY OF DIRT & AIR - Oil & Canvas Abstract Floral Painting
By Jered Sprecher
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
A companion painting to this piece, TECHNOLOGY OF DIRT is owned by the Knoxville Museum of Art.
The painting "TECHNOLOGY OF DIRT & AIR" was inspired by an image glanced as I passed by a florist shop window. Inside the florist show was a vibrant floral arrangement overflowing with roses and foliage.
On the surface of the window were reflections of architecture behind me and abstracted slivers of light and distorted shapes of things reflected though hardly recognizable. I snapped a few photographs at the time.
Several months later, I returned to those images and was intrigued at how the flowers in the image seemed to be made out of crystal and how the reflections on the window "interrupted" the ability to easily make out the forms in the photograph. I was intrigued by the complexity of the image and how recognizable elements emerged and then faded into abstraction. As I worked on this painting, I wanted it to be as if it was coming into crisp focus, while also becoming a complicated tapestry of shapes and colors. I have made six paintings in this series thus far.
Jered Sprecher is a visual artist who was born in Lincoln, Nebraska (1976). He received his M.F.A. from the University of Iowa and his B.A. from Concordia University in Nebraska. He has taught at Princeton University and Cornell University. Mr. Sprecher currently lives and works in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he is an assistant professor at the University of Tennessee.
Jered Sprecher’s studio practice explores the “handwriting” of humankind. The vocabulary that he draws from is focused on the vast array of marks and images in one’s surroundings. From this vocabulary he samples visual motifs and imports them into his paintings and drawings. These works continually focus on remnants and fragments that are captured in the midst of change, then edited and fused together in the space of painting. These images are pregnant with a longing to communicate. The success and failure of these “messages in a bottle” are the basis of his work.
Mr. Sprecher has had solo exhibitions at Wendy Cooper Gallery, Chicago; Jeff Bailey Gallery, New York; the Art Gallery of Knoxville; The Cress Gallery-UTC, Chattanooga; and Steven Zevitas Gallery, Boston. His work has also been included in group exhibitions at The Drawing Center, New York; Brooklyn Academy of Music (Next Next Art), New York; Cheekwood Museum of Art, Nashville; Des Moines Art Center; Urban Institute for Contemporary Art, Grand Rapids; Arthouse, Austin; Mark Moore Gallery...
