Henry John Yeend King
A Day in the Countryside by Henry John Yeend King

late 1800s

About the Item

This delightful painting by the renowned Victorian genre and landscape artist Henry John Yeend King captures the serene charm of the English countryside. Depicting an idyllic riverside scene, the composition features elegantly dressed figures enjoying a peaceful day on the water. A group sits leisurely in small sailboats, with one figure shielding herself from the sun with a parasol. In the background, a picturesque wooden bridge spans the tranquil waterway, while vibrant flowers bloom in abundance on the far bank. The foreground showcases delicate yellow water lilies floating on the calm surface, enhancing the harmonious atmosphere. This beautifully preserved piece is complemented by its original ornate frame, which enhances its timeless appeal. About the Artist Henry John Yeend King was an influential Victorian artist celebrated for his rustic genre scenes and bucolic landscapes. Trained in London and Paris under notable artists such as Léon Bonnat and Fernand Cormon, Yeend King combined the meticulous modeling of figures with the plein air techniques popularized by French Realists and Impressionists. Although he lived in London, his inspiration often came from the countryside, where he portrayed tranquil rural life with a focus on women at work or rest in picturesque settings. A frequent exhibitor at prestigious venues, including the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolor (where he served as vice-president), Yeend King's works have earned places in major collections, such as the Tate Gallery and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. This painting embodies Yeend King's ability to evoke the gentle beauty of nature and the simple pleasures of life in the countryside—a testament to his enduring legacy as a master of Victorian pastoral art. oil on canvas signed unframed: 38 x 51 cm (15 x 20 1/8 in) framed: 56 x 69 cm (22 x 27 1/8 in) Provenance: A Swedish private collection.

Twilight Landscape with Windmill and Church, 1891
Located in Stockholm, SE
"Twilight Landscape with Windmill and Church" is a captivating work by Swedish artist Albert Larsson, painted in 1891 when Larsson was 22 years old. The painting captures a landscape steeped in the quietude of dusk, with a sky ablaze in hues of red and orange, signalling the end of the day. The silhouettes of trees are rendered with astonishing detail against the twilight sky, showcasing Larsson's early mastery of light and shadow. Dominating the pastoral scene is a traditional windmill, its blades stilled against the sky, alongside the spire of a church that pierces the horizon. These structures, together with the meticulously painted trees, are testaments to the human presence within the natural world, suggesting a harmony between the two. A notable feature is the small water-filled furrow in the field, which catches the fading light of the sky, creating a pathway of reflection leading the eye through the composition. This detail highlights Larsson's skill in using light to draw attention to elements within his paintings. Albert Larsson, born on November 4, 1869, in Malmö and passing on August 31, 1952, in Lund, was an artist deeply influenced by his education in Copenhagen at the Art Academy and later at Peder Severin Krøyer...

View of the Bergsee - Oil on Canvas by Josef Brunner - Mid 19th Century
By Josef Brunner
Located in Roma, IT
View of the Bergsee is an original modern artwork realized by the Austrian artist and painter Josef Brunner in the middle of the XIX Century. Original Oil painting on Canvas cm. 72 x 3 x 102 (canvas). A beautiful original XIX Century decorated frame is included (total dimensions: 100 x 5 x 130). Both the work and the canvas are in very good conditions. Beautiful and intense oil painting depicting the Austrian mountain lake Bergsee. The painting is characterized by a particular play between lights and shadows: the light indeed is distributed in an extremely suffused but homogeneous way on the view but it is also able to create that sense of magic that characterized the whole landscape. The color of the lake therefore assumes a transparency and an iridescent blue that tends to the green and reflects the color of the surrounding mountains. The sky appears full of rainy clouds but they still allow the rays of the last sun to shine on. The general vision conveys calm and tranquility thanks also to the refined use of color and the play of lights and shadows, the turquoise and the pale opaque blue of the lake is perfectly emphasized by the various green tones of the trees. The white, gray and light brown rocky mountains embrace the lake and the cloudy sky in shades of blue increases the feeling of tranquility. The landscape is desolate; the only signs of life are the three fishermen on the shore: they are three small figures painted in different poses and illuminated by the light too. The surface of the water reflects in a spectacular way the surrounding landscape, it is similar to the surface of a mirror. The style, fantastic and almost dreamy, is into the full Germanic Romanticism. Mindful of Caspar David Friedrich's memoirs (Greifswald, 1774 - Dresda, 1840), the author certainly took his cue from the style of the German and the Austrian Romanticism; tangible signs of Romantic painting are the choice of the subject, an uncontaminated Nordic landscape, and the almost fairytale atmosphere that we find in the composition. This wonderful Romantic painting was created by the Austrian artist Josef Brunner (Wien, 1826 - Wien, 1893). Joseph Brunner was the son of Joseph...
