About the Item
Signed lower left, 'Fred Korburg', dated 1971; additionally titled on old label verso 'Street Scene: Marble Bridge and St. Nicolai Church, Copenhagen, Denmark'.
Provenance: Los Robles Galleries, Palo Alto, California.
Born in Denmark, Frederick Korburg first studied at the Graphic Art Center in Copenhagen and, later, at the Hamburg Academy of Fine Arts under Max Lieberman. After moving to California in 1920, he furthered his studies with Armin Hansen in Carmel before settling in San Francisco. Korburg was appointed art director for the San Francisco Call-Bulletin and became well known nationwide for his satirical work and cartoons of political, theatrical and sporting figures and events. He retired in 1961, and returned to fine-art painting, traveling widely and specializing in Post-Impressionist landscapes of Germany, Ireland Denmark, France and California. Over the course of a long career, Frederick Korburg was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. He exhibited widely and with success including at the San Francisco Art Association (1937), the Oakland Art Gallery and Palo Alto's Los Robles Galleries which held several one-man exhibitions of his work.
