Fanch Lel
Coastal Village with Docked Boats and Waterfront Homes French Oil Painting

20TH CENTURY

About the Item

Coastal Village signed by Fanch Lel (French b. 1930) size: 9 x 10.5 inches oil painting on board, unframed condition: the painting is in very good condition. It has previously been stored in the artists studio. Provenance: all the paintings we have for sale by this artist have come from the artists estate and have had no previous owners at all. Description: This painting portrays a moody coastal scene with boats docked near a pier and small houses perched along the waterfront. The sky is a mixture of soft blues and greens, possibly indicating an overcast or approaching storm. The buildings, with their chimneys releasing wisps of smoke, suggest a quaint seaside village, while the boats, both in the water and docked, add a sense of life and activity. The brushstrokes are loose and expressive, typical of the impressionistic style, giving the scene a dynamic quality as if capturing a moment in time rather than a static image. The use of darker tones contrasts with the lighter shades of the sky and water, creating depth and atmosphere. We are pleased to offer a significant collection of original works by Fanch Lel, a celebrated Breton artist known for his captivating depictions of Brittany’s landscapes, markets, and traditional life. Fanch Lel’s paintings, primarily executed in oil and gouache, evoke the serenity and charm of the French countryside, with a particular emphasis on the region's coastal and rural beauty. His works often highlight iconic landmarks such as Mont Saint-Michel and capture the essence of Breton culture with his portrayals of the region’s people and customs. Lel's self-taught, plein air approach allows for dynamic compositions that reflect the atmospheric light and textures of the region, giving his pieces a timeless appeal. His choice of soft, muted colors and rich textures brings a sense of nostalgia and quietude to each painting, making them a perfect addition to collections that appreciate mid-century French art. A member of the Société des Artistes Indépendants and a Knight of the Palmes Académiques, Fanch Lel's works have been featured in numerous exhibitions across France, including in Paris, Avranches, Dinard, and Pont-Aven, to name a few. His art has been highly sought after by collectors for decades. This collection offers a rare opportunity to acquire original works by Fanch Lel, whose paintings resonate with the cultural heritage of Brittany, while also offering a serene window into the natural beauty of the French countryside. Undeterred by nature’s extremes, Cople has painted in blizzards in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah; on the precarious cliffs of Monhegan Island, Maine; in howling gales off the California coast; and, of course, in both summer and winter in her beloved Eastern Shore of Maryland and Potomac River...
