We are EXCITED to offer this wonderful piece by Eric Sloane - but also sad to see this sold, though we would be pleased to have others admire this also. This is an iconic image of what Eric Sloane is known for - a Covered Bridge in New England. Also present in this piece as well as a number of other pieces of his, are a boy in straw hat, with his dog, fishing on the shore the river that flows under the bridge. Note the unique character of this bridge - the missing boards, the usual shape of the bridge. Research seems to point that this bridge is located in Vermont. The beatifully done tree frames not only the side of the painting but also the top, and one can feel the texture of the bark as well as of the sides of bridge and its roof. We have seen other covered bridge paintings with rivers by Sloane, and have included two images of ones that have been for sale in the past. Though the two similar scenes attached here might be of the same coverage bridge, it varies a bit from this painting of Spring, especially if you look at the stonework to the right of the bridge. In looking at these other paintings previously available for sale in detail, it is believed that Spring, for sale here, exceeds the others in quality, detail, color and is more aesthetically pleasing. Also note the prices - we feel that Spring is priced well below what one might expect. This is a piece which is better seen in person. Photos can only show so much. If you enjoy the nostaglia of New England that Eric Sloane captured in his paintings, this has everything of interest - his covered bridge, flowing river, rocks, beautifully done trees, and that young boy in the straw hat perhaps playing hooky from school and out fishing with his dog! Hope you see the beauty in this piece as we do. Artist: Eric Sloane (1905–1985) Title: Spring Media: Oil (on Masonite - typical for this artist) Signed: "Eric Sloane N.A.", Lower Left. Also signed and titled on the back: Spring; Eric Sloane Artwork Measures: Approx 18"x23-1/2" Frame: Approx 24"x30"; Believed to be the original frame. Frame is natural wood with a wonderful gold leaf-like border/accent. Typical of the 1970s into the 80s. (On the back of the frame and the masonite, are matching numbers which is probably related to Sloane's numbering system and probably used to match the custom frame with the piece of art.) Eric Sloane (1905–1985) was an American painter, illustrator, and author known for his depictions of rural American landscapes, particularly barns, covered bridges, and the traditional way of life in early America. Born as Everard Jean Hinrichs in New York City, he adopted the name Eric Sloane after traveling across the country as a sign painter. Sloane was a self-taught artist with a deep appreciation for Americana. He is famous for his detailed paintings of skies and clouds, which were influenced by his early interest in meteorology. His books, often featuring his own illustrations, focused on early American tools, architecture, farming techniques, and folklore. Some of his well-known works include A Reverence for Wood, Diary of an Early American Boy, and An Age of Barns. Throughout his career, Sloane’s artwork captured the nostalgic charm of pre-industrial America. His work is preserved in collections such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Eric Sloane Museum in Connecticut is dedicated to his legacy.
