Doris Lee
Framed Modernist Oil Painting of Colorado Mountain Town, Summer Landscape Art

About the Item

This original oil on board painting by acclaimed American artist Doris Emrick Lee depicts a vibrant Colorado mountain town bathed in warm summer light. The composition captures a charming rural scene with rolling hills, rustic houses, winding roads, and telephone poles—a nod to the evolving infrastructure of small-town America in the mid-20th century. Executed in Lee’s signature blend of American Scene realism and modernist flair, this landscape reflects her keen eye for the beauty in everyday life. Medium: Oil on board Framed dimensions: 15 ½" H x 26" W x 1 ¾" D Image size: 12" H x 22 ⅜" W Provenance: Private collection, Denver, Colorado This is a rare and striking example of 20th-century American regional painting, ideal for collectors of Modernism, female artists, or historic Western landscapes. About the Artist: Doris Emrick Lee (1904–1983) Doris Lee was one of the most prominent American female painters of the 1930s and ’40s. Born in Aledo, Illinois, she was deeply influenced by domestic life and folk traditions, which often featured in her work. Lee studied with Ernest Lawson at the Kansas City Art Institute, with André L’Hôte in Paris, and later in San Francisco with Arnold Blanch, whom she married in 1939. Her breakthrough came in 1935 when her painting Thanksgiving won the Logan Purchase Prize at the Art Institute of Chicago. Despite sparking controversy for its unpretentious, naive style, the work became a beloved piece of American art and was widely reproduced. Lee’s career included WPA mural commissions for the U.S. Post Office, illustrations for Life magazine, and multiple awards, including the Carnegie Prize (1944). She lived and worked in Woodstock, New York, a hub for progressive artists, where she remained active in the local art scene. Her work combines charm and wit with strong narrative storytelling, placing her among the most compelling voices in American Scene painting. Today, her paintings are held in major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum, and Smithsonian American Art Museum. This framed painting is a beautiful and historically significant piece by one of America’s most beloved 20th-century women artists.

Moonlight Shanties
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Moonlight Shanties, c. 1940s, oil on canvas, 24 x 18 inches, signed lower right, signed and titled verso About the Painting In Moonlight Shanties, Joachim depicts a lower-class neighborhood sitting along-side an elevated road or railway which crowds out the small nearby houses and structures. Joachim’s use of an expressionist palette and gestural brushstrokes together with the isolated figures obscured in the shadows, create a feeling of unease, isolation and even loneliness. From the 1920s through 1940s, American artists commonly employed expressionist conventions in their social realist works which portrayed the gritty side of urban America, especially the communities of the city-dwelling poor. Expressionist styles were considered appropriate for bridging the gap between the modernist idea of art-for-art’s-sake and the narrative qualities demanded by the dual crises of the Great Depression and World War II. Moonlight Shanties successfully uses these expressionist methods to portray a neighborhood and its people who appear to be literally and figuratively “on the edge.” About the Artist Paul Lamar Joachim...
