'Green Sea, Portban' is a stunning example of Donald McIntyre painting at his best. The painting is full of life, with a wonderful bright colour palette, reminiscent of Wales.
Donald McIntyre was a British painter best known for his lush depictions of landscapes in Scotland and Wales. Working en plein-air, he vividly captured fleeting light conditions with boldly colorful and simplified compositions—often abbreviating architecture or figures into a few simple blocks of color in a manner that recalls the later work of the Bay Area Figurative painter David Park. Born in 1923 in Leeds, United Kingdom, McIntyre studied as a dentist a the Glasgow Dental Hospital while taking night classes in art at the Glasgow School of Art. Today, the artist’s works are held in the collections of the Llyfrgell Geneglaethol Cymru National Library of Wales, the American Embassy in London, the Newport Art Gallery, and the Williamson Art Gallery, among others. McIntyre died on January 13, 2009 in Bangor, Wales.

Donald McIntyre
British artist Donald McIntyre’s seascape paintings capture the essence of coastal shorelines through vivid compositions imbued with a calm simplicity. McIntyre's work embodies the Scottish Colourist tradition of landscape art. He places the viewer at the boundary of civilization and nature, with a strong focus on the natural scenery, as the images of manmade structures seem to fade into the background.
McIntyre was born in Leeds, Yorkshire. He studied dentistry at the Glasgow Dental Hospital and also attended night classes at the Glasgow School of Art. While working as a dentist, he served in the British Army, taught art classes and painted in his spare time.
In the late 1950s, McIntyre left dentistry to take up painting full time. He traveled throughout the British Isles, painting scenes of shorelines and countrysides, as well as occasional interior settings and portraits. The seascapes McIntyre created are a favorite among Scottish art collectors.
McIntyre exhibited at many galleries throughout the United Kingdom before his death in 2009. Many public and private collections contain his works, including the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth — as well as galleries in Birkenhead, England and Newport, Wales.

In 1852, twenty-nine year old William Bradford was a failing shopkeeper in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. With a wife and child at home, Bradford, by his own admission, “spent too much time in painting to succeed” in business. Rescued from insolvency by his well-to-do in-laws, this is not the beginning of a narrative that generally leads to a happy ending. Not so with Bradford, who ultimately found international fame and fortune as a painter of arctic seascapes and dramatic marine paintings.
William Bradford, the artist, was a lineal descendant of the 17th-century Separatist leader William Bradford, a founder of the Plymouth Plantation, signer of the Mayflower Compact and Governor of the Plymouth Colony. Our Bradford born to a New Bedford ship outfitter in Fairhaven, Massachusetts By the nineteenth century, this line of Bradfords were Quakers, living on the tract purchased nearly two centuries earlier by their pilgrim ancestor. Fairhaven, across the mouth of the Acushnet River from the whaling center of New Bedford was described by a New York journalist in 1857 as “the Brooklyn of New Bedford” (Home Journal, January 3, 1857). Young Bradford displayed an early predilection for the arts, but his Quaker parents were disinclined to support this particular pursuit. After working in his father’s business and then for a dry goods merchant in New Bedford, by 1849 Bradford had set up in New Bedford as a “merchant tailor” offering outfits for “those going to California,” “seamen’s clothing,” custom-tailored “piece goods...
