Claude Gemy
Colourful French Courtyard Garden View, The Geraniums.

About the Item

French late 20th Century gouache on card of a colourful garden courtyard by Claude Gemy. The painting is signed bottom right and is annotated to the bottom edge. Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist's atelier. A charming and colourful view of a colourful courtyard. The scene is the back of an old stone house and barn. The bright orange geraniums catch the eye as does the distinctive colour of the handrail. The lush verdant green of all the plants suggests a sunny summer's day, as does the washing hanging to dry and the bright azure blue sky. Gemy has used a wonderfully vivid palette of oranges, blues and tones of white to make the composition sing. Claude Gemy was an artist from the South of France. He studied fine arts in Toulon. His work is figurative but, sometimes, his paintings look towards the abstract. He takes liberties, revealing a very personal representation of the scenes and landscapes. Colour is omnipresent and invites us on a journey around Provence, with "its warm and flamboyant colours". He explains that his way of working varies: sometimes he paints directly on site and then takes his canvas back to his studio. Otherwise, he sketches and paints afterwards, but nothing is systematic: it's all a question of moment.

Charles Evans was a modernist known for his abstract style of painting. He studied at New York's Art Students League and Parsons School of Design, and later in Paris with Fernand Lger at the Acadmie Moderne. In 1930, Evans and his wife spent a year living in what was Paul Cezanne's studio in Aix-en-Provence, France. The following year, Evans purchased the old silk mill in New Hope and became involved in the area's modernist movement, joining the Independents in 1932. By 1935, he began to work collaboratively with Louis Stone, whom he had met in 1929 while studying with Hans Hofman in Saint Tropez, and with Charles F. Ramsey, teaching art classes and working on the Cooperative Painting Project. Every week, the three were joined by the abstract painter, Lee Gatch, in discussions at Ledger's Inn in Lambertville. In 1948 Evans co-founded the New Hope Gazette with Walter M. Teller. The same year he created set designs for St. John Terrell's Lambertville Music Circus. He also designed sets for the Bucks County Playhouse and Philadelphia's Playhouse in the Park. He later served as Set Designer for the Fred Miller...
