Charles Towne is the leading Liverpool landscape, animal and sporting painter of the first half of the nineteenth century. In his early work, his drawing is charmingly naive and provincial, and shows an awareness of the contemporary work of Thomas Stringer and, ultimately, George Stubbs, both of whom were from the same geographical area.
By the late 1790's he had developed more sophisticated draughtsmanly skills which are his subsequent hallmark throughout a long career. He was born in Wigan in 1763, but passed most of his working life in Liverpool; his frequent employment in rural Lancashire and Cheshire arose from a wide patronage among the local gentry. He visited London in the late 1790's, where he was noted in Farrington's "Diaries", and it seems likely that it was here that his techniques developed their more sophisticated aspects. His first painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1799. In the next decade he appears to have been itinerant (his name is missing from the Liverpool Directories for these years), but by the end of the decade, he was sufficiently well-known in that City to be a founder, and the Vice-President of Liverpool Academy. He died in Liverpool on 6th January 1840, the possessor of a considerable local and national reputation

Charles Towne
Charles Towne was an English painter of landscapes, horses and other animals with a particular skill for horse racing and hunting scenes. Born in Wigan, his talent for art was apparent from a young age, and he received some training from John Rathbone in Leeds. By the 1790s, Towne was an established animal painter with style reminiscent of Stubbs. He lived in London from 1799–1804, during which he exhibited at the Royal Academy. Towne's work was well regarded by his contemporaries, including Joseph Farington.

Henry Schafer was born in Hanover, Germany in 1841. Although little is known about his upbringing, he was known to have studied at the l'Ecole National de Beaux-Arts in Paris. After leaving art school, he travelled throughout Europe painting town scenes and buildings of Northern France, Belgium and Germany. By 1864, Schafer had travelled to England with his wife Theresa, to work in London where they settled and started a family. All four of their children were born in England. One of his daughters Emilie Anna Schafer (1871-1937) became a painter and art teacher.
Around 1871, the family were living at 53 Vauxhall Bridge Road and in 1881 were recorded as residing at 6, Sophia Terrace, Beulah Road, Thornton Heath in Surrey, with Henry continuing to work as an artist. By 1891, he had moved to 7 St Peters Road in Islington where he lived for the rest of his life. Sometime around the turn of the century, he became a British subject. Schafer is believed to have died in London c1914.

William Thornley was a painter of coastal scenes whose work is very similar to Hubert and Charles Thornley, who may have been members of the same family. He painted scenes of genre, architecture, and landscapes as well. A number of the landscapes were of Belgium, Holland, Italy, and Norway. However, it is for his seascapes that he is best remembered.
Thornley’s works are beautifully detailed and show a masterful understanding of the moods of both weather and sea. They are often small in size and put together with fine detail and great artistic merit. Thornley’s fishing scenes are spirited and similar in style to those of “Jock” Wilson, and are often painted in pairs. Thornley’s works have always been popular when they appear on the art market.
He was believed to have first exhibited marines at the Royal Academy in 1859 from an address in Paddington, London and also at the British Institution from 1861 until it closed in 1867. He continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy until 1898.
Thornley also exhibited at the Paris Salon and the Salon of French Artists, receiving an honorable mention in 1881 and a third-place medal in 1888.
