Signed and dated figure in landscape oil on board by French impressionist painter Charles Lacoste. A truly stunning piece with depicts a nighttime view of a Parisian street with a single woman dressed in a black coat and hat standing in the centre of of dark square which is being dimly lit by the street lights overhead. The outline of trees and the city's buildings can be seen in the distance. Signature: Signed and dated 1904 lower right. Dimensions: Framed: 24.5"x31" Unframed: 18.5"x25" Provenance: Wildenstein & Co - New York "Charles Lacoste: A Forgotten Nabi" 2002 This work is accompanied by the catalogue published to accompany the exhibition “Charles Lacoste: A Forgotten Nabi” held at Wildenstein in New York from January 30 to March 2, 2002 The son of a Bordeaux accountant and a creole mother, he met in high school the future poet Francis Jammes and Gabriel Frizeau the legendary art collector. He taught himself to paint and from 1894 to 1897 he made several important contacts: André Gide, Arthur Fontaine, the brothers Rouart and the composer Henri Duparc. His frequent stays in London marked his vision of the nature of a hazy melancholy. He was refused at the Society of Friends of the Arts in Bordeaux, but appeared in public in 1898 at the Salon de La Plume, a magazine then published his article "Simplicity in Painting" and then he exhibited in October at the Salon des Cent. He moved to Paris and from 1901 to 1914 exhibiting at the Salon des Independents. He was a founding member of the Salon d'Automne, he also exhibited at the Salon of Free Aesthetics in Brussels in 1907 and Salon of the Golden Fleece of Moscow in 1908. By a process of simplification and a kind of desired naivety, Lacoste, faithful to the idealistic tendency, found subjects of wonder or reverie sometimes disturbing in the foggy and wintry atmospheres which allow the artist to simplify the forms. Charles Lacoste lived in Monein, then in Pardies, where a street and the communal primary school bear his name. He is buried in the cemetery of Pardies.

Impressions de New York No. 3
Located in Saratoga Springs, NY
David Solot, a dentist and painter, was born in Falciu (Romania) and settled in Paris in 1928. His art was surrealistic dentally inspired plus portraits and city landscapes. **************************** Translated from an article by Luana Hrisanti Rigot: "In 1956, at the Charlotte Norberg Gallery (Paris), he presented his first personal exhibition, composed of an ensemble of surrealist paintings of professional inspiration (dental elements). Two years later, at Gallery Royale (Rochefort), he exhibits another 50 paintings on the subject. At that time, a decisive event for the painter David Solot was made: a great new-York-born antibiotic producer Lederle Cy learns about his work and contacts him through the US Ambassador to Paris, proposing an advertising contract and buying the reproduction right for 24 of its canvases. A year later, the same company bought the right to print three of its cloths in color. This was the starting point of his international notoriety. In 1959, the American Dental...
