About the Item

A pleasant impressionist landscape by well known American artist Charles Herbert Woodbury (1864-1940). Woodbury was born in Lynn, MA, and sold his first painting when he was fifteen years old and became the youngest member elected into the Boston Art Club at age 17. After graduating from MIT, he studied at the Academie Julian in Paris, returning to Boston to pursue his career in painting. He taught summer painting classes in Ogunquit, some over 100 at a time, and eventually taught over 4,000 students, with over 100 solo exhibitions, and became one of the most influential artists to work in the Northeast. Oil on canvasboard, signed lower left, titled on verso Vose Galleries label “The Hill,” date inscribed “1912” on verso, and housed in a decorative giltwood frame.
