Original large scale 1920s California landscape circle of Ernest Bruce Nelson (American, 1888 - 1971). This landscape is in tonalist style of featuring golden foothills of Palo Alto possibly west of Stanford where Nelson attended college. Santa Cruz Mountains in the background with majestic oaks framing the scene adding balance to the composition. Lake off center adds interest and dimension

Signature: Faint remnants lower right corner.
Condition: Previously relined on masonite; professionally cleaned. Frame is rustic wormwood style and is included as-is (see images).

(Ernest) Bruce Nelson was born on June 13, 1888 in Santa Clara, California. He studied at Stanford University under Robert B. Harshe, the Art Students' League of New York, and at the Woodstock Summer School (ASL) under John F. Carlson and Birge Harrison. He maintained studio locations and residences at Palo Alto, San Jose and Pacific Grove, California.
In 1912 he exhibited twenty paintings at the galleries of Helgesen & Marshall in San Francisco, and later in November 1914 he exhibited twenty-four more paintings with the same gallery. He exhibited in Los Angeles in May, 1914, and at the Oakland Art Gallery in 1916 and with the San Francisco Art Association.
In 1914, Anthony Anderson, art critic for the "Los Angeles Times" newspaper, described Nelson's works as, "lively and delicate, full of light and air, of brooding sunshine and permeating mists". Bruce Nelson painted coastal seascapes, coastal valleys, and coastal villages. The location of many of Bruce Nelson's paintings are unknown. The exact date and place of death of Bruce Nelson are unknown.
Bruce Nelson held a membership at the San Francisco Art Association, and he won the Silver Medal at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915 and the Honorable Mention at the Woodstock Summer School in New York, 1911.

Oil painting of the California coastline at sunset in the style of Edgar Alwin Payne (American, 1883-1947). Deep grey clouds pose in the top corners with hues of pink light shining through. Choppy waves crash against deep red and brown rocks, as the whites of the wave hurl upward. The ocean shows tones of green, blue and yellow as the sunlight shines from above. Condition: professionally restored, previous reline onto Masonite with edge and corner wear. New UV resisting, non yellowing varnish applied.

Edgar Alwin Payne was an American painter known for his landscapes, seascapes and western paintings.
He was born in Washburn, Missouri on March 1, 1882, and began painting at the age of 14. He began his career by designing and painting scenery for the stage, and murals for homes and theaters. Primarily a self taught artist, he did though study briefly at the Art Institute in Chicago.
Recognized as one of California's leading landscape artists, Payne earned the respect of his peers and art critics for his Impressionistic landscapes painted in the plein-air style. Possessing a reverence for nature, he especially loved the mountains. Frequently he took pack horses in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range to the upper lakes to sketch and paint, there he glorified the areas majestic peaks and cobalt blue lakes. Payne Lake was named in his memory.
Drawn to Europe, Payne trekked to and painted the elevated heights of the Swiss Alps, the colorful fishing boats of Concarneau Harbor and Brittany, France and the picturesque sailing vessels of Chioggia, Venice, Italy. He spent time capturing on canvas Arizona's Canyon De Chelly and Navajo horsemen traversing the region's arid tablelands. He painted California...
