About the Item

James Koskinas_ Not framed. Does not need to be framed. This large scale painting of a head hints at Picasso. Both technically accomplished and classically approached, the thick gestural brushstrokes add a fragmented & tactile character to the canvas. Warm palette juxtaposed against cool gray background. This comes stretched and ready to hang. Message me for shipping quote About the artist: James Koskinas, born in Terre Haute, Indiana in 1947, is a painter, writer, actor and co-creator of the film ,“The Twilight Angel,” as well as a play, “Even if The Mountains Burn.” Currently James lives works, paints and writes in Santa Fe, New Mexico with his wife, Julie Schumer, also a painter. The figure is James’ primary theme, part of his quest to know the human condition. He attempts to paint as automatically as possible which is intended to bring forth elements of his unconscious. He adds layers of paint until the original painting has been covered over many times, working at a rapid pace. He usually has more than one painting going at the same time. Influenced by Native American mythology, Koskinas sees the role of the artist as akin to that of a shaman, trusting his instincts and freeing the figure from the customary restraints that painting imposes. A chance meeting with a lost stallion on a Arizona highway set in motion Koskinas’s lifetime obsession with painting horses. Lately he has added a rider to his horses. The riders have become self-portraits and a search for unity between the horse and man.

Playing, Acrylic on Canvas, Orange, Red, Yellow by Indian Artist "In Stock"
By Farhad Hussain
Located in Kolkata, West Bengal
Farhad Hussain - Playing - 30 x 42 inches (unframed size) Acrylic on Canvas Inclusive of shipment in roll form. Style: Farhad Hussain's colourful work that includes drawings and watercolours besides paintings on canvas, features day to day visual experiences of middle-class urban India. He endows his narrative with iconography and personality through his figuration, their posturing, dress and the surrounding imagery. The drama of subtle complexities of human relationships and social environment are grounded with a sense of satire mixed with pathos. Farhad’s colours help enhance the brightness and aura of his paintings while he also partakes elements from traditions such as the formulaic textile patterns of Indian miniatures. His compositions are often set in a familiar drawing room or a social space, playing out with humour and sarcasm, the narrative psychologies of human life and encounters at various levels. This young artist who has also experimented with sculpture has already carved a niche and an instantly recognizable individualistic style befitting his aesthetics and concerns. Farhad has chosen to use tempera on cloth for his works, the media allowing him to achieve the desired vibrancy of colours. A slow build-up of images and spontaneous flow of colour while balancing colour and composition simultaneously follow structured formatting. This meticulous planning in the composition and layout is the beginning of a process from where onwards it is very spontaneous and intuitive. Another technique used throughout Farhad’s work is the method of applying the colour: dot-by-dot till the entire area is completely covered. Various elements from miniature paintings, Kalighat paintings, Japanese prints and images from mass media are scrutinized, transformed and transferred on to the surface through the artists own style of expression.
