Statement from Stephen Basso about “The Hypnotist” :
“Some years ago I took a cruise for the first and probably the last time.I did not enjoy the experience but one night a show featuring a hypnotist piqued my interest. The hypnotist would select members from the audience and put them in a deep sleep. Everyone seemed to cooperate with the exception of one woman who was not going with the program. I found this amusing and when I returned to my studio proceeded to make a recording of the experience. I put myself in the far right of the painting although I was not actually on stage. How could I paint it otherwise?”

Stephen Basso's highly original pastels and oil paintings are romantic, yet thought provoking fantasies. His whimsical works are alive with boundless imagination, wry wit and fearless color. Mr. Basso’s works evoke a high level of inquiry. The fanciful, yet keenly observed characters are unpredictable and evocative. The viewer vacillates between surprise, delight, and consternation. A Brooklyn native, much of Basso's wildly imaginative artwork was inspired by travel to Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and especially Mexico. Combining a New York and a Mexican sensibility, he says of his work, "There is a natural surreal quality to Mexico that can collide with its harsh realities. One might call it bittersweet. It is often bawdy, but rarely vulgar, and images are everywhere. Love, hate, fear desire and of course, humor, never go out of style.” And he adds, " I like mixing high ideals with American irreverence."
The elements of mystery, escapism, and humor blended with reality define his art. It is of a personal nature consisting of a cast of characters that inhabit the stage between the extreme highs and lows of life, a state of limbo where dreamlike scenarios are often pulled back to the reality of daily existence. Of his process, Mr. Basso says, "The paintings and drawings begin with objects around my home and studio, photos from various sources, and people I know, have known, or have yet to meet." By in large, Basso is self taught. (After initially attending the School of Visual Arts for Illustration, he realized painting was more engaging for him.) Seeking emotional honesty, he looked to the work of several "mentors": Max Beckmann, Francisco Goya, Willem de Kooning , Philip Guston , Marsden Hartley and Albert Pinkham Ryder - artists that spoke to the human condition.

About the artist:
Karl A. McIntosh is a self taught artist who works is pastel, watercolor, acrylic, stone, wood and metal and is a known for his imaginative transformation of found objects into works of art. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, McIntosh moved to the United States at an early age and later took up art. Among his mentors are artist Otto Neals with whom he worked at the Bob Blackburn Printmaking Working Workshop and artist Marian Griffin. McIntosh is also a poet, drummer and dancer who draws his creative inspiration and expression from his study of African art and culture.
McIntosh’s bold, bright colors dance off the page and tantalize the senses. His work is profound in its statement and deliciously whimsical. His work is an honest portrayal of everyday life and the people who live it but on occasion, takes on public figures and world events most often employing satire as thick as the layers of paint or paper he uses to depict them.

"Just off Brady Street, in Milwaukee’s East Side, there used to be a place with class and style," says artist Leroy Burt. The store was a treasure trove of vintage goodies that were as fun to dig through as to wear. The shop was full of clothing, shoes, jewelry, and bags, some dating back to the golden days of the 40s, 50s, and 60s. The ceiling was pink and covered with toys, trinkets, signs, and other captivating eye candy.
About the Artist
Artist Leroy Burt paints playful, offbeat landscapes and portraits based on his experiences living in Milwaukee, New York, Costa Rica, and currently Rochester, Minnesota. "I think of my paintings as short stories," he says. As a young child, Leroy faced a number of obstacles. His parents divorced when he was four years old and he was raised by his grandparents in a three-room shack without running water or electricity. Leroy worked hard to pull himself out of poverty. He studied graphic design and painting, which led to a 30-year career in graphic design - five years at WMVS, the PBS television station in Milwaukee, fifteen years at city hall in Milwaukee, and ten years at WNET, the PBS station in New York. In 2015, Leroy retired to focus his energy on painting. Today, he works from a tiny studio filled with half-finished paintings stacked against every wall. "There are photos and sketches for future paintings taped everywhere," says Leroy. "My windows are filled with orchids. There are books, films and music CDs in every corner. And the room is dominated by a black and silver Andy Warhol silkscreen...
