Comments/Other: A member of the Cowboy Artists of America and the American Watercolor Society, Ray Swanson was known for his Southwest Native American subjects, which included the Navajo, Hopi, Zuni and Apache Indians. Raised in South Dakota, Swanson settled in Carefree, Arizona where he first visited a Navajo Reservation in Arizona sometime in the early 1960s. From that time on, he incorporated Indian figures and genre into his subject matter. Nice piece in keeping with Swanson's Southwest Genre. Large and looks more like a photo than a painting, again, very typical of his work!
His paintings have been auctioned at figures as high as $108,000 (2012) - "Movin' Through Dry Country ".
More commonly, prices seen are up to $35k, such as with Navajo Playmates selling for $35,000 in 2023.

From Ray Swanson's Wife: "You have an interesting watercolor painting by Ray, which he painted in 1969 at his studio in Oak Glen, California (Yucaipa ,CA address). At that period in his career, he called his watercolors, "drybrush watercolors". Later he referred to them as "gouache" but he used gouache paint for them. He achieved the remarkable detail by using very little water with his pure watercolor paints. The approximate value is $14,000 for this size."
