About the Artist: David Spivak (1893–1932)
David Spivak was a prominent early 20th-century Colorado-based impressionist painter, known for his emotive landscapes, expressive portraits, and luminous still lifes. Born in Philadelphia, Spivak moved to Denver in 1895. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and later at the Art Students League of New York under notable American realist Robert Henri, who significantly influenced his artistic development.
After serving in World War I, Spivak returned to Denver where he became a central figure in the city's cultural and artistic community. He taught at multiple institutions including the Denver Art Institute and the Chappell School of Art, and was instrumental in shaping the local arts scene. A founding member of the Denver Artists’ Guild, he also played a vital role in the growth of the Denver Art Museum and curated fine art exhibitions for the Colorado State Fair.
Throughout his career, Spivak created more than 300 works, often characterized by rich color, dynamic brushwork, and impressionistic light. His artistic legacy lives on in his landscapes, still lifes, and portraits that reflect both a deep connection to the Colorado environment and a commitment to artistic expression accessible to all.
He passed away at the age of 39 in 1932, leaving behind a body of work that continues to resonate with collectors of American regionalism and WPA-era modernism.
