Waterlilies

2020

About the Item

Waterlilies is a painting on linen, created with layers of oil paint, acrylic paint, and resin. The natural color of the raw linen makes up the base of the painting. Swaths of oil and acrylic paint are applied directly to the linen. Then, the canvas is laid flat, and Yektai pours a liquid resin on top of the painted canvas. Once this layer is smooth, even, and hardened, Yektai places forms on top of the resin layer, in oil and acrylic paints. Some forms are abstract, and some forms are naturalized, meant to portray lilypads on a pond, or branches of a willow tree hanging down. This is a prime example of Yektai's passion for art history meeting his passion for materials. Darius Yektai was born in Southampton NY, in 1973. He lives and works out of his home and studio in Sag Harbor. He grew up in a cultural home of art and artists, with his Greek-American Mother, and his Father, Manoucher Yektai, an Iranian who emigrated to the US after the Second World War, was a prominent Hamptons AbEx painter. Darius has picked up some traits from his father but pushes even further into what is now completely his-own. Darius' most recent body of work is bright, colorful, with oil and acrylic paints laid on thick. He's creating sculptural paintings that can't be read from left to right, they need to be examined from surface to base, from section to section, and then overall as an encompassing whole. "Daniels Lane" contemporary oil on resin painting colorful modern farm landscape
By Darius Yektai
Located in Sag Harbor, NY
An oil painting of a landscape in Sagaponack NY. Lines radiate across the canvas towards the bottom and right side of the canvas in shades of yellow, brown and orange, indicating rows of plants or tilled soil in a field. The field is surrounded by lush thick brush-stokes in shades of green flecked there and there with bright orange. The top fourth of the painting shows the sky, full of points of paint, most under the resin. The white dots above the resin cast shadows below, adding dimension to the piece. The two radiating lines that surround the lower righthand corner are also painted above the resin, one white and one a swirl of primary colors loosely mixed together. The raw white gessoed linen canvas is clearly visible between the precisely placed brush-strokes, all sealed under resin...
