About the Item
This artwork depicts the Pont Coudé stone arch bridge in the French town of Brantôme, the "Dordogne's Venice". Interestingly, although most pictures of the bridge show the abbey across the bridge, the artist choose to take the opposite point of view. The parapet goes up from the middle right of the canvas to the left top quarter. Its symmetric reflect in the river water creates a feeling of depth. The sky is blue with high clouds, a yellow and orange character (a worker in safety clothes ?) is walking or standing on the bridge, buildings are ochre.
Yves Calméjane usually uses light impasto techniques, with the weft of the canvas often still visible. The reliefs are quite thin, the painting often spread out, with frank touches on some parts of the canvas.
The color palette is soft, with very elaborate tones, no rough paint from the tube. Calméjane doesn't try to embellish the colors : although an impressionist he has a very realistic approach in terms of colors and ambiances, which can on some paintings give an impression of austerity. This is not the case on this one, though : although very sober, the lighting is very soft.
Calméjane always paints his landscapes in situ. The canvas has been prepared and stretched by the artist himself, with skin glue. The sides are covered with a grey custom adhesive for a better rendering in case the artwork is to be mounted on a floating frame. The artist always use renowned brands for his color tubes, with quality pigments. The canvas is not completely covered by paint, there are a few spots where the (brown) canvas is naked.

Born in 1956 near Paris, Yves Calméjane is a French artist. Calméjane studied fine arts in Nantes and Paris. He then followed tracks of his favorite painters to settle in Provence and finally joined Auvergne in 2013. Calméjane is mostly influenced by Auguste Chabaud and Jean Arène.
