Vjacheslav ZABELIN (Mosca, 1935 – 2001)
Definito da alcuni critici come “il più grande impressionista russo del XX secolo”, Vyacheslav Nikolaevich Zabelin è nato nel 1935 a Khamovniki, uno storico quartiere di Mosca. Dopo la guerra, alla fine degli anni Quaranta, ha l’opportunità di lavorare nello studio di M. A. Slanov, dove il famoso artista K. F. Yuon ha occasione di notare il suo lavoro e lo fa ammettere alla Scuola d’Arte di Mosca nel 1956. Prosegue gli studi fino al 1961, quando s’iscrive all’Istituto Surikov, dove consegue il diploma e il diploma post-laurea con il professor V. Tsyplakov. Già dal 1957 inizia un’intensissima attività espositiva in patria e all’estero. Nel 1991 gli viene conferito il prestigioso titolo di Artista Emerito dell’Unione Sovietica.
Come la maggior parte degli artisti russi, Zabelin è stato fortemente influenzato dal mondo che lo circondava: “Sono nato e cresciuto a Mosca… le vecchie strade, le stranezze nascoste di questa città, il monastero di Novodevichii, mi hanno trasformato in un artista: queste sono le mie zone native, la mia piccola patria”. Amava l’architettura russa per la sua meravigliosa asimmetria e il suo luogo preferito per dipingere era la città vecchia di Rostov, da dove proviene la maggior parte dei suoi dipinti. Zabelin è stato un importante sostenitore dell’istruzione e della formazione artistica e dal 1967, fino alla sua morte, ha insegnato all’Istituto Surikov. Spronava gli studenti a non imitare, bensì a seguire i principi dell’arte, dando la massima importanza alla composizione, per sviluppare poi la propria personalità. Le caratteristiche che hanno fatto di Zabelin una figura di rilievo nell’arte russa sono la ricerca incondizionata del senso estetico delle cose, l’intima conoscenza della pittura e della letteratura russa e la profonda comprensione dell’interdipendenza e dell’inevitabilità del cambiamento degli stili artistici. L’essenza stessa dell’opera di Zabelin è frutto delle tradizioni della cultura e della vita russa.
