Signed figures in landscape oil on board circa 1905 by Australian-American impressionist painter Richard Hayley Lever. The work depicts fishing vessels docked in the harbour in Douarnenez in Brittany, France with the fishermen unloading their catch.

Richard Hayley Lever settled in the USA in 1911. He trained in Paris and England, where he frequented the St Ives Group and began painting seascapes, a genre with which he later achieved widespread renown. His reputation was quickly established after his arrival in America, and his work featured in numerous exhibitions prior to the Wall Street Crash of 1929. He obtained American citizenship and taught at the Art Students' League from 1919 to 1931. He was the winner of the Carnegie Foundation prize in 1914. His early work was profoundly influenced by that of Vincent van Gogh.

Richard Hayley Lever
An Australian by birth, Richard Hayley Lever left his native Adelaide at the age of 17 to train as an artist in Europe, and his work soon won attention in London and Paris. In 1900 he was introduced to the St Ives Club by fellow Australian Louis Grier, and he married Aida Gale in the town in the same year. Working closely with Grier and with Julius Olsson he maintained St Ives as a base, while also painting marine subjects along the southern coast of England and in Brittany. In 1912 Hayley Lever move to New York and took American citizenship. His paintings of the Hudson Valley, Vermont, and Nantucket secured an international reputation.

The work depicts a woman carrying a basket with a young child beside her walking along a snowy path in a Fontainebleau Forest. This early work by Vignon was painted whilst he was under the tutelage of Camille Corot in the period between 1869 and 1870 . The work shows a mother and child in the forest at Fontainebleau in winter. Many painters in Vignon's circle such as Monet, Renoir, Sisley and Bazille visited this area to paint in the late 1860's and the early 1870's.
