About the Item

Ramón Llovet (1917-1987) - Father and son - Oil on canvas Canvas measures 50x61 cm. Frame measures 56x67 cm. Ramon Llovet Miserol (Barcelona, August 7, 1917 - Barcelona, August 2, 1987) was a painter who cultivated other disciplines such as engraving and sculpture. He was born in Barcelona into a humble working family. From a very young age he began to draw and paint. Later, he attended classes in Llotja and at the Ateneo Obrero. In 1938 he participated as a soldier in the Civil War and returned from the front with the heart injury that he suffered from birth aggravated, some small drawings and watercolors about his experiences and an incipient contempt for the military world and all forms of violence. His early work has some influences from the Noucentisme, but is closer to the work of Gimeno, both for the theme, as for the use of earthy and dark colors and the material brushstroke. In 1939 he held his first exhibition at the Galerías Costa de Barcelona, where he will hold two more exhibitions. He participated in the autumn salons (October Hall) of the 1940s and 1950s. He became a member of the FAD and actively participated in all kinds of debates and discussions on artistic issues. In 1948 he broke with the previous period and painted a short series of expressionist-cubist works. With a restless and investigative temperament, his work constantly evolved. Thus, from 1950, there was a new change in the conception of his work, now social, dramatic themes predominated, within a lyrical expressionism. He exhibited these works in the Sala Argos, between 1951 and 1956. From here on, his work was valued and recognized by critics, collectors, etc. He received different awards and made the first exhibitions outside the country. During the 1957-58 season, he became part of the Sala Gaspar group of painters until the 1980s. As of 1955 his work began a slow evolution towards a greater lyricism - without forgetting irony or criticism. Ramon Llovet in his study In 1967 he became interested in the thought and work of the pacifist Lanza del Vasto, which influenced his way of thinking, his life and his work. He was also deeply interested in the philosophical work of the thinker Krishnamurti and in theosophy. From here, the poetic and spiritual content of his work was accentuated until it ended -in the mid-70s and until his last works- in an almost metaphysical representation of reality.
