About the Item
Sibusiso Duma, born in 1978 in Mbumbulu, Durban, is a prominent South African artist known for his distinctive approach to art. Beginning his creative journey as a child, Duma quickly garnered attention from his teachers, who encouraged him to produce educational materials. His career took a pivotal turn under the mentorship of the late Trevor Makhoba, a renowned South African artist known for his socially critical works. Duma's collaboration with Makhoba from 1994 to 2003 through the Philange Art Project was instrumental in shaping his artistic style and vision.
Duma’s artwork often explores the complexities of rural and urban lifestyles, addressing social issues with humor and satire. His unique visual language is marked by the use of bright colors, hard shadows, and a distinctive application of pointillism. Themes in his work frequently include rural landscapes and traditional elements, reflecting his deep engagement with both contemporary and cultural narratives.
Having exhibited widely, Duma’s works are held in various collections locally and internationally. Notable pieces like "Wabashwa Ubaba (Father Is Arrested)" and "Going Back Home" showcase his engagement with contemporary social issues. His recent exhibitions, such as 'Ukube uMama usenathi (If Mama Were Still With Us)', highlight his evolving artistry and commitment to addressing significant cultural themes through his evocative and vibrant style.

Sibusiso Duma's talent was noticed initially and nourished by the late Trevor Makhoba (1956 - 2003) through his Philange Art Project based in Umlazitownship, Durban. From 1994, Duma was under Makhoba's tutelage and subsequently shared a stage with Makhoba and another former student, Welcome Danca. Together they held a number of exhibitions at the African Art Centre in Durban. Following Makhoba's death in 2003, Duma has continued to build on his own narrative. The influence of Makhoba is still visible, but this does more credit than harm. Since 2003, Duma's paintings have been exhibited frequently including notable awards solo exhibitions. Duma's work is widely collected and held in public and private collections.

'In The Box'
Located in Cape Town, ZA
Born and raised in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zemba Luzamba interrogates social and political power structures in Africa, transforming the everyday experiences of African migrants through his bold imagery. Bordering on satire, Luzamba subtly comments on a range of socio-political issues, appearing to mimic and question the colonial lifestyle of the post-colonial elites. A contemporary realist, his captivating paintings, produced over weeks of re-working and layering with oil, illustrate African figures engaged in various activities, from political ritual to dapper men engaged in moments of leisure. Zemba Luzamba, born 1973, currently lives and works in South Africa after having relocated to pursue his career as an artist. This experience has allowed him an intimate view of migrant communities, informing many of his works over the last 15 years. His work has been exhibited extensively in a range of solo and group shows such as 'When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting’ at Zeitz Mocaa, and can be found in international and local collections, namely the Irma Stern...
