In "The March", Maura Petersen paints a vivid, dynamic scene that evokes the collective power of movement, community, and purpose. The marching figures, painted in bold, abstract hues, stand resolutely in the foreground, their faces softened and nearly indistinct, representing unity over individuality. The swirling colors and flowing lines behind them suggest motion, not only of the people but of something larger—perhaps the momentum of a shared goal or a movement toward change.
The figures' lack of specific identity allows for universal interpretation, inviting the viewer to see themselves within the group. The distant backdrop—a stylized, almost dreamlike rendition of architecture and nature—reminds us that their journey is not just physical, but symbolic, with the future landscape ahead shaped by their collective action. The flowing red and white stripes in the sky echo a sense of patriotism or hope, while the soft curves of the land and buildings speak to the ongoing passage of time and the potential for transformation.
Petersen’s use of vibrant, contrasting colors emphasizes the emotional intensity of the march, while the abstraction of the figures keeps the focus on the energy of the movement itself, rather than the individuals within it. "The March" is not just about what is seen, but about the unseen power of collective action, the silent force of determination that shapes history.
About the Artist:
Maura Petersen, an inspired artist, was nurtured in an environment steeped in artistry, shaped by the vibrant community surrounding her father, Roland Petersen, a founding professor at the University of California Davis Art Department. Her childhood was rich in modern art influences, with sculptures and paintings by notable artists like Manuel Neri and Wayne Thiebaud gracing her family home. A pivotal sabbatical to Europe in the 1960s exposed her to the art scenes in Paris and London, where she attended lectures and marveled at masterpieces in the Louvre and other prestigious museums.
Later on in her career, Maura engaged in intensive study from 2017 to 2021 at Monterey Peninsula College and Cabrillo College, focusing on Color Theory, figure drawing/painting, and Design. Her mentorship under Claire Thorson and her father helped refine her technique, focusing on contrasts in values, saturation, and spatial dynamics. Maura’s artistic medium of choice includes oils for expansive, free-form subject matter and acrylics for structured, prismatic motifs. Her works explore the interaction of the human figure with both natural and constructed environments, capturing the contrasts of light and shadow and the interplay of forms.
