Kristen Brown
Intrinsic Vibrancies II, Oil Painting

2024

About the Item

Artist Comments
A weary mother cradles her child, portraying resilience and their unbreakable bond. Flowing, textured bedding wraps them in warmth and enhances the intimacy of their embrace. An abstract background hints at the fleeting moments of peace amidst the chaos.

About the Artist
Artist Kristen Brown sheds light on the fragility of memories with her dreamlike portraits. Kristen uses her knowledge of photography to create motion blur, distortion and multiple exposures in her oil paintings, overlapping figures, landscapes and cityscapes. The models in her paintings are referenced from people close to her, and the locations are significant places from various time periods throughout her life. "I will often use multiple places or time periods in a painting to illustrate the idea of being taken back into a past moment from a current one, or the idea of the past and present feeling as though they are happening simultaneously," she explains. In the rare cases when she is not painting, you can find her printmaking, dabbling in ceramics, traveling, playing guitar or meditating. Kristen graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Saskatchewan in Canada and a Master of Fine Arts from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA.

About the Artist
Naoko Paluszak began her career by studying graphic design in Tokyo, followed by several years working as a designer, before switching to oil painting. Now located in the United States, Naoko continues to develop her style through different series of paintings that have varying degrees of abstraction. By bridging representational with non-representational forms, the artist seeks to stir personal memories and spark new narratives. “Art is about having a sense of mystery and drama,” she says. American Progress
By Tracy Stuckey
Located in Bozeman, MT
Tracy Stuckey received his BFA in painting from Florida State University and his MFA from the University of New Mexico. He has exhibited his work extensively throughout the United States, with numerous solo and group exhibitions, including shows curated by gallery owner Linda Durham and artist Joel Peter Witkin. He has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards, most recently the Professional Development Grant from the West Virginia Division of Culture and History. In 2009 he was an artist-in-residence at the Center for Land Use Interpretation in Wendover, Utah. Also a professor, Stuckey has taught at West Virginia University, and most recently, Colorado State University. Tracy and his wife, artist Erika Osborne, live in Fort Collins, Colorado. ARTIST STATEMENT My paintings operate in a fictitious world that utilizes the mythologies and realities of the modern American West. Because of its unique history, the Western United States is more than just a location; it is a label, a persona and most importantly a cultural identity. The word "Western" is a category; it is used to describe films, literature, music, art, and fashion. In my work I use the cowboy and cowgirl and other stereotypical Western themes coupled with pop cultural depictions of the region to reflect my own interpretations of the contemporary West. I am interested in historian Michael Johnson...
