Study for 'Happy Landing' Amoco Ad
By Joseph Christian Leyendecker
Located in Fort Washington, PA
Medium: Oil and Pencil on Canvas Signature: Unsigned During his over four decades as the preeminent illustrator for The Saturday Evening Post, Joseph Christian Leyendecker's clever illustrations were eagerly anticipated by enthusiastic readership across the country, and none more so than his holiday designs. One of Leyendecker's most celebrated creations was his groundbreaking idea of the New Year's Baby. Originally portrayed as a fleshy sweet-faced child complete with tiny angel wings, the New Year's Baby gradually morphed into a worldly tot acutely aware of the social and political issues facing the nation at the time. In fact, Leyendecker's final Post cover illustration was the 1943 New Year's Baby. Following the success of these Post covers, the artist was hired to create advertisements for the American Oil Company (AMOCO). Throughout the 1940s and through the final years of his life, Leyendecker produced ads incorporating his famed New Year's Baby into AMOCO advertisements, as in the present work, Happy Landing...

'Azure & Sand', California Figurative Abstraction, Pacific Art League, Palo Alto
By Amanda Danitschek
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Initialed lower left, 'A.D.' for Amanda Danitschek (American, born 1956) and painted circa 2010. Additionally signed twice, verso, and titled, 'Against All Odds (12 Stories)' A substantial Modernist figural oil showing a view of a woman standing before an azure band of distant ocean. Born in Delano, California, Amanda Danitschek first studied art and design at San Jose City College and, subsequently, at West Valley College, Saratoga. Danitschek explores her fascination with postures, expressions, and colors in her collages and paintings through unconventionally observed figures that appear untethered from the physical world. Speaking of her work, the artist has said: "My figurative paintings are a menagerie of quirky creatures that evoke a curious sense of dislocation. They are redolent of actors in a play, characters from a novel and depression-era survivors. I am fascinated by postures, expressions, colors and textures. I eliminate detail so that the persona is left with only their essence. The alternative reality is shared with birds, boats and ethereal costumes. The stage is set and the figures are finding their path; their role in life."
