About the Item

Jonathan Pratt British, (1835-1911) Spinning Wool Oil on canvas, signed Image size: 12 inches x 17.75 inches Size including frame: 17.25 inches x 23 inches A pleasing genre painting of a woman spinning wool in a cottage by Jonathan Pratt. The woman is shown plying yarn with a spinning wheel and a Lazy Kate beside a fire with two cats. Above the window is a sign in Latin ‘Claro Pare’ which translates as ‘be clear’. Jonathan Pratt was born at Bull Head Lane in Northampton on 27 April, 1835 to Joshua Pratt, a shoe maker and Rebecca Boys. He attended Lancastrian School in Northampton and showed an early talent for drawing and painting. At the age of 11, he went to Wolverhampton to be an apprentice to the portrait painter Robert Andrews, working with him at his studio in Waterloo Road. After his apprenticeship was over, he began working as a full time artist in Lincolnshire where he met his wife Susana Strawson. They married on 6 November, 1856 at Claxby and moved to Leicester where their son, the artist Theophilus Claude Pratt (1860-1935) was later born. By 1861, the family had moved to 7 Camden Street in Doncaster where they lived for a few years until 1863 when they relocated to the Birmingham area. Whilst Pratt initially worked as a portrait painter he developed his style and subject matter further to become a figurative painter, specialising in genre scenes. He started exhibiting in Birmingham from 1864 and made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1871. He also exhibited at Suffolk Street, the Royal Institute of British Artists, Glasgow Institute of Fine Art and other major galleries during his lifetime. His change of tack paid off and he became a successful artist. In 1872, he was made a Member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and in 1873 became the Director of the Costume Academy. He later became secretary of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, remaining in post until the year of his death. By 1881, Pratt had settled at 19 Greenfield Crescent, Edgbaston where he lived and worked for over a decade. After the death of his wife, he lived at Wylde Green in Sutton Coldfield with the artist William Joseph King and his wife. He died at 53, Highbridge Road, Wylde Green on 27 August 1911. His works show extensive use and knowledge of his palette, working large areas of light and shade with subtle mid tones. His figures are natural in poise giving them character and life. Examples of his paintings are held by the Birmingham Museum, Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, Guernsey Museum, Guildhall Art Gallery, John Wesley’s House & The Museum of Methodism, Leicester Town Hall and the Wednesbury Museum & Art Gallery. Presentation: The work is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished. © Benton Fine Art

19th Century genre oil painting of a woman & child in a Welsh cottage
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
Alfred Provis British, (1818-1890) By the Fireside Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1869 Image size: 10.5 inches x 15.5 inches Size including frame: 21.5 inches x 26.5 inches This charming cottage scene by Alfred Provis features a woman preparing supper by a fire with her young daughter. As the mother peels the turnips and places them in the pot, the girl’s attention is drawn to the kitten feeding from a saucer. The dress and hat of the woman bears a similarity to those found Provis’s other scenes of Welsh cottage interiors. The artist was known to have visited North Wales around the time this painting was produced. In 1869, he exhibited a work entitled ‘Interior of a Welsh Farmhouse’ at the Royal Society of British Artists. Given the level of detail in the painting and the fact that it is in such an impressive original frame, it is possible this is the same painting as the one exhibited. Alfred Provis was a genre painter born on 18 February, 1818 in Chippenham, Wiltshire. He was the son of John Provis, a timber merchant and his second wife Ann Banks. He spent time in London being tutored by the historical and portrait artist John Wood (1801-1870) before returning to Chippenham. He began exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1843, continuing to exhibit there regularly until 1886. He made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1846 with a work entitled ‘A Cottage Door...

"Meditation" Dutch Woman Sewing Interior Genre Home scene Fruit Flowers on Table
By Bernard De Hoog
Located in Rancho Santa Fe, CA
Bernard de Hoog was born in Amsterdam in 1866. He studied under J.F. Hulk and J.C. van Essen at the Quellinus School in Amsterdam. Mainly a genre and portrait painter, he occupies a distinguished place among the masters of Dutch modernism. He was associated with The Hague School, primarily a movement of realism, a reaction against Romanticism. He lived and worked in Laren, Haarlem, Bussum, and The Hague enjoying much commercial success. His paintings were readily exported to the United State, Canada, and England. De Hoog advocated the simple country life and produced many endearing interior scenes inspired by compassion for the impoverished existence of the Dutch peasantry. Set within a quiet domestic interior space, our painting catches a meditative moment of a woman in the midst of her sewing. A large window illuminates this intimate interior. de Hoog’s delicate brushwork captures the sunlight reflected in the woman’s red dress...

The Grape Seller - Workshop of Jacob Ochtervelt
Located in Stockholm, SE
Jacob Ochtervelt (Workshop) The Grape Seller oil on canvas unframed: 80.7 x 61 cm.; 31 ¾ x 24 in. framed: 109.5 x 89 cm.; 43 1/8 x 35 in. Essay: This captivating piece, originating from the studio of the revered Dutch artist Jacob Ochtervelt, mirrors the composition of a signed and dated 1669 canvas by Ochtervelt that is presently housed in the Hermitage museum. Its subject, "The Grape Seller" immerses us in a typical 17th-century interior, replete with characters from various strata of society. At the center, a fruit vendor is depicted bending over to weigh grapes for the buyer. A child hands some of the grapes to her mother to taste, their attentive maid standing by. The backdrop showcases typical Ochtervelt details: a hint of the city visible through the doorway, light filtering in through an overhead window, and a playful dog at their side. The exquisite quality of the piece is evident in the minutiae, such as the intricate detailing of the mother's earring, which in reality spans only a few millimeters yet boasts impressive attention to detail. Initially, Sotheby's considered this work to be an autograph piece by Ochtervelt. But due to some uncertainty, it was auctioned as Workshop of Jacob Ochtervelt. On the other hand, the esteemed Cabinet Turquin in Paris leans toward attributing the piece directly to Jacob Ochtervelt himself. The painting is framed in an authentic period frame, which has been delicately restored by Stockholm's Förgyllning och Bildhuggeri. The frame retains its age-old patina and, while in used condition, has minor imperfections adding to its charm. Another interesting thing worth to mention is the painting's provenance. It was once owned by the 1st Viscount Rothermere (1868-1940), the founder of the Daily Mail and Daily Mirror...
