About the Item
Jacopo Scassellati was born in Sassari (Sardinia) in 1989 where he still resides today. His family is originally from Umbria. Very early on, he displayed a strong predisposition for art. Grandson and son of artists, he followed in the footsteps of his grandfather Franco Scassellati, by strolling through the meanders of the ceramist laboratory, where he played with clay and colors, transforming them into works that revealed his precocious talent. Thus, he quite naturally learned the handling process of colors and the secret of ceramicists. He attended the classic D. A. Azuni high-school in Sassari and obtained his baccalaureate in 2008. During the course of his studies, while working on a project aimed at preserving the Sardinian language, he met writer Gavino Ledda; a friendship that was to lead to the new edition of the novel Padre padrone and other works by Gavino Ledda. In 2012, he graduated from the Beaux Arts Academy of Sassari. While he likes to express himself with his brushes and his colors, he nonetheless often reverts back to sources. He sculpts clay works that bring to mind the Sardinian tradition as well as his classic studies. For him, art is a mental process that is displayed through the manipulation and transformation of materials, that are researched, studied, experimented with patience and obvious pleasure. Indeed, his hands accompany all his creations, guided by his experience as artist-craftsman, from the choice of materials up to the composition of the painting, pursuing an idea, resulting from his urges, emotions, souvenirs and academic studies. He makes his own pigments, like a painter of yesteryear, even though he is constantly seeking new experiences. From there springs his constant artistic metamorphosis, which according to art critic Vittorio Sgarbi, makes him "a young man of talent with a rhythm that no longer exists". He was commissioned to create two altarpieces for the Cathedral of Campi (Teramo), representing the Annunciation and the Deposition. His first personal exhibition, which took place in 2008, was entitled Jacopo Giovin pittore (Jacopo young painter), in Spello (Perugia). For this occasion, the leading Italian art critic, Vittorio Sgarbi, displayed an enthusiastic interest for the talent of Jacopo Scassellati, even comparing him, because of his amazing artistic ascension, to the Grand Masters of the past, having reached the summit of glory at a very young age.

Biography
Irish artist George Campbell began painting during the blitz of Belfast while working in an aircraft factory. He painted in Connemara, London and most frequently, Spain, where he lived for twenty five years. A founder member of the Irish Exhibition of Living Art, Campbell was a member of the RHA, and won, among other awards, the Douglas Hyde Gold Medal in 1966 and the Oireachtas Prize for Landscape in 1969. Campbell’s paintings are represented in Irish public and private collections.
Campbell was born in Arklow, County Wicklow, the son of the respected artist Gretta Bowen (1880-1981) & Matthew Campbell (1866-1925). He attended boarding school in Dublin (Masonic Orphan Boys’ School at Clonskeagh) before moving to Belfast to live with his widowed mother and family.
Campbell was working in an aircraft factory at the time of the Belfast Blitz, and began to paint, taking the bomb-damage as his subject. He was one of the founders of the Irish Exhibition of Living Art in 1943. In the same year along with his brother Arthur (1909-1994) he published a sixteen-page book entitled Ulster in Black and White, that included drawings from the two brothers and their close contemporaries Maurice Wilks...

By Charles Webster Hawthorne
Located in Bryn Mawr, PA
Like his mentor the great American Impressionist William Merritt Chase, Charles Webster Hawthorne was equally admired in his own day as both a talented painter and a highly influential instructor. Hawthorne first studied with Chase at his Shinnecock Summer School of Art, which was specifically dedicated to open-air landscape painting. Not only did Hawthorne quickly absorb all the principles of Chase’s instruction, but he also became determined to found his own school based on the same model. In 1899 Hawthorne discovered the small fishing village of Provincetown on the furthermost tip of Cape Cod, and after purchasing a large house on Miller Hill, he opened the Cape Cod School of Art, which proved to be an immediate success.
While Hawthorne’s own approach as a teacher owed much to Chase, he developed a distinctly unique painting style and teaching method that defies easy categorization. He was greatly impressed with the work of Franz Hals, which he was exposed to during his trip to Holland in the summer of 1898. Hawthorne was particularly struck by Hals’ Regentesses of the Old Men’s Almhouse, and from this work he absorbed a deep appreciation for the power of human expression and an economy of technique. Hawthorne applied these lessons to his own realistic portraits of Provincetown fishermen and their families; these works have a somber, almost melancholy quality to them, and they reveal a sense of the vulnerability of the human condition.
Stylistically, Hawthorne maintained a life-long commitment to the importance of color. “Beauty in art,” he said, “is the delicious notes of color one against the other.” Of equal importance to him was capturing the effects of light. He told his students: “Everything in painting is a matter of silhouettes. Hold light against shadow, not light against light.” He developed a particular technique of layering glazes and texturing the surface of his paintings, which heightens the relationship between the colors and creates a light effect that seems to emanate from within the painting. These stylistic techniques in combination with his straightforward compositions of one or more figures shown at close range create the hallmarks of Hawthorne’s best paintings.
Hawthorne and his wife Ethel’s 1905-1907 trip to Italy did not result in a drastic impact on his artistic style. Nonetheless, it proved to be a transformative and enlightening voyage. The extensive trip was financed by collectors who paid in advance for a painting to be produced abroad. On the trip, Hawthorne explored the work of old masters and was struck particularly by the paintings of Titian, which to Hawthorne, demonstrated the master’s true adoration for the act of painting itself through his handling of paint and color. Where Titian’s paintings...
