Fulda’s story began in 1879 in Berlin's Britz district (formerly Teltow) as Martha Elizabeth Rungius, one of the nine children of Heinrich Rungius (a local minister) and Leuchen Fulda (the superintendent of a diocese). Biographers describe the childhood of the Rungius's as idyllic thanks to their access to gardens and animals, which likely began her budding relationship with the nature and visual arts. The influence of her eldest brother, Carl, particularly guided her toward becoming a professional artist. She would recall later that his proverb “never praise your own work” stayed with her throughout her life. Throughout her time in Germany, Elisabeth received private lessons from her brother and other artists who were associates of Carl, such as August Gaul and Richard Friese.
Unfortunately, she, like many women, struggled to receive formal education from Berlin art institutions due to gender-specific barriers and biases. However, that did not deter her, and after marrying an American named Carl Fulda on August 15, 1905, she immigrated to the United States and studied at the Cooper Union (one of the first co-educational schools) in New York City. Fulda received a certificate of completion in the course "Drawing from Life and in Anatomy" in 1913 from Cooper Union and attended classes in landscape painting at the Art Students League in Woodstock, New York. By 1916, she divorced her husband but kept her name professionally as Elisabeth R. Fulda or Elisabeth Fulda.
Based on the staff records at the AMNH, she was employed as an artist and then as a photographer for the Department of Vertebrate Paleontology between 1917 and 1926. Her absence from employment records during the 1940s means she was a resident or freelance artist when creating the preparatory paintings for “History of Life on Earth.” Some of her other work held at the museum includes drawings of a scene at a Mammoth Pit and a sculpture of Protoceratops hatchlings used in an exhibit. Many of the photographs she created are invaluable in documenting the processes of specimen collection and exhibit preparation within the department.
Fulda’s work outside of AMNH included projects for the Library of Congress and the New York Zoological Park, and her art was shown in spaces like the Burr Galleries and the Village Art Center in NYC. Fulda was also part of a small collective of NYC-based artists who would paint at the Bronx Zoo. Eventually, this group developed into the Society for Animal Artists, where she served as the organization's first president in 1960 and was a board member until 1967.
Similarly, she was an active member of The Artists Union and the National Association of Women Artists. She also made a name for herself as a poet in Greenwich Village circles, writing “Alas! Poor Dodo,” a children’s poem about the extinct bird. It was published in 1928 under the name Lise Fulda and reflects some influences from her time at AMNH (where the book is preserved in the Research Library) and the Bronx Zoo.

The Boston Art Club.
Walter Shirlaw, born on August 6, 1838, was only three (fourteen according to one obituary) when he came to Hoboken, New Jersey from his place of birth, Paisley, Scotland. As a young man, he found work as a bank note engraver, a profession that he continued in Chicago, where he lived between 1865 and 1870. But already in 1861 he was exhibiting genre paintings at the National Academy of Design. In 1868, Shirlaw was a member of the Chicago Academy of Design, which would become the Art Institute of Chicago, after changing its name from the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts.
Shirlaw spent the years 1870-77 in Munich, at the height of the movement led by Wilhelm Leibl in which a low-keyed, dark palette, combined with bold, virtuoso brushwork, were applied to realist subject matter. Michael Quick (in Quick, Ruhmer, and West, 1978, p. 28) defined the time of Shirlaw's arrival (1870-73) as an especially experimental period in progressive German painting. Shirlaw's teachers, however, sided with tradition. The genre painter Arthur Ramberg (1819-1895) and Wilhelm von Lindenschmidt (1829-1895), his successor at the Munich Academy, taught Shirlaw composition. The painter of genre scenes and landscapes, Alexander von Wagner (1838-1919) was Shirlaw's teacher in painting. T. H. Bartlett (in American Artists and Their Works, 1889, vol. 1, p. 23) mentioned that Shirlaw regarded Leibl as too realistic.
Shirlaw won a scholarship at the Academy in 1874, the year in which he executed Toning the Bell (Art Institute of Chicago). Meanwhile, he was active as one of the "Duveneck Boys" in Polling. Sheep Shearing in the Bavarian Highlands (Private collection), painted under Lindenschmidt's direction in 1876, is regarded as one of Shirlaw's most important pictures. He exhibited it upon his return to America at the National Academy in the following year; in 1878, it won an Honorable Mention in Paris.
In 1877, the second school year of the Art Students League, Lemuel E. Wilmarth announced that he would be returning to teach at the NAD. Frank Waller (1842-1923) took over as president of the ASL, and Shirlaw was hired to teach painting and drawing. The appointment was endorsed by Waller: "In Munich . . . he was regarded as one of the strongest of the American students and had the strong personality which would attract and influence others to have confidence in him, was so genuine in his artistic impulses and in his interest in the development of art in this country. . . ." (quoted by Landgren, 1940, p. 32).
The hiring of Shirlaw and William Merritt Chase seemed to signify a preference of Munich over Paris among the members of the Art Students League, however, while Chase was under Leibl's spell, Shirlaw was strictly academic. During the fourth season at the ASL, Shirlaw taught composition. Thomas Wilmer Dewing...

Aaron Bohrod's work has not been limited to one style or medium. Initially recognized as a regionalist painter of American scenes, particularly of his native Chicago, Bohrod later devoted himself to detailed still-life paintings rendered in the trompe l'oeil style. He also worked for several years in ceramics and wrote a book on pottery.
Born in 1907, Bohrod began his studies at Chicago's Crane Junior College in 1925, and two years later enrolled in the Art Institute of Chicago. But it was at the Art Students League in New York City, from 1930 to 1932, that he studied under the man believed to be his most significant early influence, John Sloan. Sloan's romantic realism is reflected in the many depictions of Chicago life...

Artist Biography: Born in New York City in 1923, Herb Mears was interested in art from a young age. He studied under Fernand Leger in Paris and went on to paint and study in various studios in France and Italy before his arrival in Houston in 1951. With colleague David Adickes, whom he had met in Paris, Mears decided to open an art school. Their Studio of Contemporary Arts finally settled in an old building on Main Street with Mears and Adickes hoping to give classes to potential students. However money was tight and Mears found himself as a draftsman for Houston Lighting and Power Company, a job he excelled at and enjoyed. Later, Mears was involved in the Contemporary Arts Association, frequently making trips to ensure security in addition to enjoying the art scene the Association provided. From the CAA to the Art League of Houston and the Museum of Fine Arts, Mears began to gain recognition. An abstract, or non-objective piece as he called it, won a prize at a competition held by the Museum of Fine Arts, earning him a teaching position at the Museum School. Mears also taught at the Contemporary Arts Museum, University of Houston...

"Mid Summer Journey on Sledge" Impressionist South African Painting
By John Koenakeefe Mohl
Located in Houston, TX
Oil painting on canvas board of a sledge pulled by oxen. The painting is done in an impressionist style. The canvas board is signed by the artist on the front and titled, signed and dated on the back. The board is not framed.
Artist Biography:
John Koenakeefe Mohl was born on 29 September 1903 in Dinokana, Zeerust in the North-West Province. Mohl's father was a carpenter who sculpted objects such as chairs and mealie stampers. During his youth, Mohl drew with 'pepa' on rocks and made clay objects. He attended primary school in Dinokana where his teachers reprimanded him for constantly drawing in class. Mohl's father eventually withdrew him from school to tend to the goats. Nevertheless, Reverend Hale soon recognized Mohl’s talent and convinced his father to allow him to draw.
Mohl attended the Moeding Training Institute (later known as Tigerkloof Training School) where he attained a teacher’s diploma. He subsequently accompanied a German artist to South West Africa (now Namibia) where he studied painting at the Windhoek School of Art. The Missionary Society and the Lutheran Church then sent him to Dusseldorf, West Germany where he studied art at the Kunst-Akademie during the following five years.
The artist later returned to South Africa and settled in Sophiatown, where he started running art classes from his home. His art school was known to his peers as the ‘White Studio’. He was one of the first Black artists to be involved in art education and training. In the late 1950s, he was prevented from operating a business; therefore he established the Apollo Art...
