Born in 1907 in Edinburgh, Charles McCall ‘wanted to be an artist very early in life… my father would have none of it’. Nonetheless, in 1933 won a scholarship to the Edinburgh College of Art, where he studied under DM Sutherland and SJ Peploe. In 1938 had the unusual distinction of being made a Fellow of Edinburgh College of Art at the age of 31. Continued studies in Paris at the Academie Colarossi under Friesz and elsewhere on the Continent in 1937-38. On his return he began immediately exhibiting work at the RA and with the London Group. Held one man shows in Manchester, Dublin in 1951, New York in 1955, Montreal and Winnipeg. Elected NEAC in 1957. His work is represented in the Paisley Art Gallery, York Museum, Government Art Collection, City of London Corporation, Maidstone Museum, Usher Gallery and City of Edinburgh Collection.
McCall is a painter, mainly in oil, especially of small, intimate interiors, and street scenes in London and France. His work has a strong sense of colour, painterliness and an awareness of French influences such as Vuillard.

Wiltshire Streams, Pink Moon, 2023 - Green Contemporary Landscape Oil Painting
By Tim Woolcock
Located in Kingsclere, GB
Tim Woolcock was born in Lancashire, though his family originates from St Just-in-Penwith in Cornwall, where the artist spent many summers. He now lives part of the year on his farm in County Carlow, Ireland, where his studio is located.
Between 1963 and 1970 Tim attended Arnold School in Blackpool and regularly visited the Grundy Art Gallery in the town. In 1971, he began his studies in to study Philosophy and Art at the Roehampton Institute, University of London. After graduating, Tim stayed in London to teach for twelve years.
Tim's painting clearly shows his inspiration from Modern British painters, particularly the traditions of the 1950s and St Ives Schools. As with landscape painters of the earlier twentieth century, such as Paul Nash and Evelyn Dunbar, Tim's landscapes have a somewhat mystical quality and at times approach abstraction. The simplicity and geometry found in work of the St Ives School - so important to the development of Modern British art - is a particular inspiration, with artists such as Patrick Heron, William Scott and Ben Nicholson being most key in his development, though Tim's paintings have a strength and clarity all their own. A knowledge of Zen and understanding of the natural world is reflected in his work,
'I have been greatly influenced by Zen writers, some who have said that the real aim of art is purposeless - not to be confused with a nihilistic approach - in 'Zen and The...

Peter Greenham was a distinguished figurative painter of portraits, landscapes and incidents from domestic life. His work was both sensitive and intelligent and like himself, without showiness or pretension. He was keeper of the Royal Academy Schools and a popular figure who taught many well-known artists including Martin Yeoman, Peter Kuhfeld, Edmund Fairfax-Lucy and Jane Corsellis.
Greenham was born in Streatham and educated at Dulwich before studying English at Magdalen College, Oxford, followed by Fine Art at the Byam Shaw School of Art in Kensington from 1936-39 under the supervision of Ernest Jackson.
After leaving Byam Shaw he became a schoolmaster at Magdalen College School, Oxford and was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1951 and an R.A. in 1960.
In 1964 he succeeded Sir Henry Rushbury as Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools, a position he held with distinction until his retirement in 1985. The Keeper has the responsibility of running the RA Schools and Greenham showed himself to have great sympathy and understanding for his students.
In retirement he was able to concentrate entirely on his painting and tended to paint places he knew well such as the Norfolk coast, Northumberland, Oxfordshire and Annecy as well as his wife, the painter Jane Dowling...
